IntroducciónLas técnicas de levantamiento de obras arquitectónicas están en continuo cambio favorecidas por el uso de nuevos aparatos que permiten, en muy poco tiempo, conseguir una gran cantidad de información con precisiones similares a las determinadas con instrumental topográfico de uso común como las estaciones totales 1. Los diferentes tipos de aparatos se adaptan a las características del levantamiento permitiendo trabajar a diferentes distancias, desde pocos decímetros para pequeñas esculturas o piezas arqueológicas, a centenares de metros para el control mé-trico de conjuntos monumentales, adaptándose a las precisiones requeridas para definir de forma óptima al objeto según su tamaño y forma.El sistema más utilizado para este tipo de levantamiento está basado en la captura de posiciones espaciales, puntos en 3d, mediante la lectura de distancias que producen los escáneres lá-ser de tipo terrestre aplicando barridos sistemáticos. Una vez controlada esta etapa, estos sistemas permiten elaborar el modelo virtual, mediante la triangulación de las posiciones 3d obtenidas utilizando los sistemas de generación de mallas. A partir de esta primera solución formal, es posible utilizar diferentes tipos de entidades tridimensionales para elaborar el modelo virtual del objeto escaneado. El término levantamiento se utiliza en todas las labores relacionadas con la toma de datos de un objeto más o menos complejo con el fin de obtener su representación gráfica (Cramer, 1986;Almagro, 2004;Buill et al., 2007)_ En arquitectura y arqueología los levantamientos son necesarios para conocer el estado del edificio desde un punto de vista amplio y genérico. La representación de un edificio en un modelo, a partir de un proceso sistemático de "levantamiento" es un objetivo prioritario en la catalogación de patrimonio arquitectónico, para poder conocer con el máximo detalle aquellos parámetros que permiten establecer con gran fidelidad las medidas y las formas del objeto que se desea catalogar, La utilización del escáner láser en los levantamientos de arquitectura, escultura o arqueologíaLos levantamientos se pueden rea1izar mediante técnicas y herramientas tradicionales, es decir, a partir de la elaboración de croquis, bocetos o dibujos que con la ayuda de cintas mé-tricas, plomadas, clinómetros, etc. (Arias et al., 2007; Pavlidis et al., 2007) permiten establecer los datos métricos necesarios para definir y conocer el objeto. Sin embargo, este proceso requiere de mucho tiempo para generar una documentación gráfica que se pueda utilizar en una catalogación precisa de elementos arquitectó-nicos, arqueológicos o de escultura.Los instrumentos utilizados en los trabajos de topografía tal como las estaciones totales, han sido instrumentos que han facilitado la labor de levantamiento de edificios y han permitido una mayor precisión métri-ca. Actualmente, se trata de aparatos que permiten el almacenamiento de las observaciones e incluso incorporar tomas fotográficas y la medida automá-tica de puntos en el área seleccionada por el operario, redundando en el rendimiento y en la eficacia de los trabajos de levantamiento. ILa aparición del escáner láser en las tareas de obtención de datos, esta cambiando la manera con la que se vienen desarrollando las técnicas de topografía para~llevantamiento terrestre dirigido al campo del urbanismo y el de la arquitectura. Las características más importantes que aportan los sistemas de láser escáner son (Núñez y Buill, 2008):• La adquisición masiva de datos tridimensionales en poco tiempo; se capturan miles de puntos por segundo.• Realizan mediciones tridimensionales de alta precisión de largo y corto alcance. Desde la implantación de los núcleos habitables primitivos hasta hoy en día se han desarrollado diferentes métodos para poder llevar a cabo el estudio y análisis del territorio. Todos estos estudios han tenido últimamente un aliado imprescindible en los sistemas de representación, e información del territorio a partir de las aplicaciones de sistemas informáticos que han permitido los avances en las tecnologías de la comunicación. Las aportaciones que se han hecho a nivel de usuario genérico, a partir de Google Earth y similares han hecho posible que sea fácilmente accesible la visualización de entornos urbanos y rurales. Las facilidades de acceso a diferentes institutos ligados a las administraciones Territoriales, Autonómicas y del Estado ponen al alcance datos técnicos que permiten adaptarlos a las necesidades de diferentes profesionales en sus labores de planificación y análisis del terreno. Son estas necesidades las que nos han planteado el trabajo que estamos realizando en la formación de los futuros profesionales del planeamiento urbanístico y de la ingeniería en geomática y topografía. En la docencia de Grado y de Máster se debe trabajar con la tecnología e información disponible actualmente para alcanzar una formación cualificada en el campo de la representación y el diseño de espacios urbanos.
