The work conditions in which supermarket checkout operators perform activities have been a recent concern to specialists. This research was carried out in eight supermarkets of two cities in KEY WORDSCheckout, risks, ergonomics. RESUMOAs condições de trabalho nas quais os operadores de checkout de supermercados realizam suas atividades têm sido uma preocupação dos especialistas nos últimos tempos. Essa pesquisa foi realizada em oito supermercados de duas cidades do Brasil com o objetivo de conhecer as condições em que os operadores realizam suas atividades, detectando os fatores de risco para propor medidas que eliminem ou minimizem o aparecimento de efeitos adversos nos trabalhadores. Foi aplicado um questionário e o método RULA a uma amostra de 80 trabalhadores. O estudo mostrou que o mobiliário não está adaptado às características antropométricas da população, a maioria das posturas analisadas é inadequada, não existem revezamento nem pausas que poderiam ajudar a minimizar a situação, existência de sobrecarga, mental e física, entre outras. Conclui-se que a atividade pode representar riscos à saúde dos operadores de caixa de supermercados. PALAVRAS-CHAVECheckout, riscos, ergonomia.
: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a non-transmissible condition with high prevalence, morbidity, and mortality. Different strategies for the management of AMI are employed worldwide, but its early diagnosis remains a major challenge. Many molecules have been proposed in recent years as predictive agents in the early detection of AMI, including troponin (C, T and I), creatine kinase MB isoenzyme, myoglobin, heart-type fatty acid-binding protein, and a family of histone deacetylases with enzymatic activities named sirtuins. Sirtuins may be used as predictive or complementary treatment strategies and the results of recent preclinical studies are promising. However, human clinical trials are scarce, data are insipid, and many issues have been raised regarding the predictive values of sirtuins. The present review summarizes research on the predictive value of sirtuins in AMI. We also briefly summarize relevant clinical trials and discuss future perspectives and possible clinical applications.
Além da terapia medicamentosa, muitos pacientes utilizam plantas medicinais para o tratamento da hipertensão e do diabetes, muitas vezes sem o conhecimento sobre a eficácia e a segurança delas. Esta pesquisa investigou a prevalência dessa prática por diabéticos e hipertensos e analisou sua associação com variáveis sociodemográficas. Foi realizado um estudo epidemiológico, descritivo e transversal com 300 pacientes atendidos pela Unidade Básica de Saúde (UBS) Ouro Branco, em Umuarama-PR, que responderam a um questionário sociodemográfico e sobre o uso de plantas medicinais. A maioria dos participantes eram mulheres, com baixa escolarização e renda mensal. Em relação ao uso dessas plantas, foram citadas 27 espécies, mas apenas 7,7% dos respondentes as utilizavam de maneira preconizada. Concluiu-se que pacientes hipertensos e diabéticos recorrem a plantas medicinais sem o conhecimento da forma correta de preparo e da potencialidade dessas espécies em causar efeitos adversos.
Bacopa monnieri(L.) Wettst. (Plantaginaceae), also known as Brahmi, has been used to improve cognitive processes and intellectual functions that are related to the preservation of memory. The objective of this research is to review the ethnobotanical applications, phytochemical composition, toxicity and activity of B. monnieriin the central nervous system. It reviewed articles on B. monnieriusing Google Scholar, SciELO, Science Direct, Lilacs, Medline, and PubMed. Saponins are the main compounds in extracts of B. monnieri. Pharmacological studies showed that B. monnieriimproves learning and memory and presents biological effects against Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and schizophrenia. No preclinical acute toxicity was reported. However, gastrointestinal side effects were reported in some healthy elderly individuals. Most studies with B. monnierihave been preclinical evaluations of cellular mechanisms in the central nervous system and further translational clinical research needs to be performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the plant.
Parkinson's disease affects the central nervous system, causing dysfunctional dopamine production. This directly affects the motor system, leading to the loss of voluntary movements, joint stiffness, limb tremors, and imbalance. Palliative treatments are applied to alleviate symptoms of the disease and improve quality of life. Considering functional changes and symptoms that are generated by Parkinson's disease, pain is also a debilitating factor that can severely affect the individual. The present study investigated the mean age, duration of involvement, body locus incidence, and interference with quality of life by pain in patients with Parkinson's disease. We applied a one-dimensional, subjective, and qualitative Visual Analog Scale and the multidimensional and interpretative Wisconsin Brief Pain Inventory. The study was conducted with 36 participants of both genders (mean age: 65.5 years for men and 72.0 years for women). The incidence of pain was detected in 87.5% of the participants. We found that pain occurred more frequently in the upper limbs and interfered with the performance of general activities. Treatment by a multidisciplinary team in all dimensions of the disease is needed to alleviate patients’ pain and consequently improve their quality of life.
