An updated synthesis of cyanobacteria and algae information is presented for Brazil aiming to refine the data gathered to date and evaluate the progress of the biodiversity knowledge about these organisms in the country since the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The results of 2015 showed an increase of 1,250 species (35.7%) when compared to 2010, reaching a total of 4,747 species. The most diverse classes in species number were the Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae had the highest increase in species number in the five-year interval. The Southeast and South regions were the most diverse, however, the Northeast, with the states of Piauí and Sergipe, and the Central-west region, with Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal, also stood out in the national algal biodiversity scenario. Despite the shortage of taxonomists and limited infrastructure, the results showed a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in the country during the study period, starting to even out regional geographical differences caused by subsampling. Key words: Biodiversity, phycology. -(Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska) Seenayya & Subba Raju (Cyanobacteria): weekly variation and relation with environmental factors in an eutrophic lake, São Paulo, SP, Brazil). Blooms of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii have become more and more frequent in Brazilian reservoirs because of its high competitiveness in tropical eutrophic systems. This species is able to produce very aggressive toxins which cause problems to public health and environmental hazards. Our objective was to follow up variations of C. raciborskii density and its relation with the environmental parameters. The studied lake is located in the south of São Paulo city (23º39' S and 46º37' W). It is an eutrophic system with frequent blooms of C. raciborskii. Samples were collected weekly in the deepest part of the lake, from September/97 to September/98. Temperature profile, mixing zone, euphotic zone, pH, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, nutrients, chlorophyll a, C. raciborskii density and total phytoplanktonic density were analysed. The ordination of abiotic and biotic data was carried out using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). During November and December/97 the highest values of C. raciborskii densities were observed. From 12/10 to 12/17, the species contributed with more than 50% to total density. In that period the water column was thermally stratified, temperature and turbidity were high and water transparency decreased. The autumn/winter of 1998 was characterized by the absence of the studied species, by unstratified water column, low water level and temperature, high values of transparency (the highest values observed in the lake) and a great increase in biomass of the macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. All these relations are presently discussed.Key words -Cyanobacteria, Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, eutrophic reservoir, weekly variation RESUMO -(Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska) Seenayya & Subba Raju (Cyanobacteria): variação semanal e relações com fatores ambientais em um reservatório eutrófico, São Paulo, SP, Brasil). -(Phytoplankton community dynamics and sanitary aspects of a eutrophic urban lake, São Paulo, SP). Phytoplanktonic algae are important in water quality assessment reflecting ecossystem dynamics. Our main purpose was to study the seasonal variation of the phytoplankton community and its relations with physical and chemical parameters of the water and coliforms from Lago das Garças (Instituto de Botânica, São Paulo, SP, Brazil). The samples for the study of the physical and chemical parameters and phytoplankton analyses were collected monthly (January 1997 to March 1998) in three depths (surface, 2 m and bottom). The phytoplankton community was studied taking into account the biomass (chlorophyll-a), density and biological index. The phytoplankton was represented by 214 taxa distributed in nine taxonomic classes. Chemical parameters showed vertical and seasonal distribution whereas the phytoplankton presented a seasonal pattern; four species of Cyanobacteria were dominant mostly in the summer (Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska)Kützing and Merismopedia tenuissima Lemmermann). -(Chlorophyceae of Billings (Taquacetuba Arm) and Guarapiranga Reservoirs, SP, Brazil). Biodiversity of Chlorophyceae in two of the greatest reservoirs from the metropolitan region of São Paulo municipality, Billings and Guarapiranga, which supply water for millions of people, was studied. The samples were collected every two months, in specifi c sites in both reservoirs, from January to December 2004. The samples were fi ltered using a plankton net (20 μm) and preserved with formaldehyde. Thirty six taxa belonging to two orders, ten families and 24 genera, were identifi ed, described and illustrated. The genus Desmodesmus presented the highest species richness (four), followed by Ankistrodesmus e Scenedesmus (three species each). Ten taxa are fi rstly reported to the studied reservoirs. Eight taxa were found exclusively in Guarapiranga reservoir and three only in Billings reservoir, whereas 70% of the identifi ed taxa were common to both reservoirs. The high species richness of Chlorophyceae confi rms the fl oristic dominance of this class in tropical and commonly eutrophyzed water bodies.Key words -Chlorophyceae, phytoplankton, reservoirs, water supply RESUMO -(Chlorophyceae das Represas Billings (Braço Taquacetuba) e Guarapiranga, SP, Brasil).
-(Chlorococcales (except Scenedesmaceae) from fi shing ponds in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil: a fl oristic survey). Studies in fi shing ponds have mainly focused on economic issues and environmental impacts, while studies on the fl ora of micro algae are rarely performed. Therefore, the objective of this study was to perform a survey of the Chlorococcales from ten fi shing ponds located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. We identifi ed 38 taxa, distributed in eight families, 19 genera and four varieties that are not typical of the species. With the exception of Scenedesmaceae, Chlorellaceae and Coelastraceae had the greatest number of taxa, 10 and eight species respectively, while Micractiniaceae, Radiococcaceae and Treubariaceae had the lowest numbers of taxa and frequencies of occurrence. Dictyosphaerium pulchellum was the only species with 90% frequency of occurrence. Out of the 38 taxa identifi ed, 19 had a frequency of occurrence between 30-55%, indicating a greater distribution of these species among the studied fi shing ponds, corroborating the information in the literature, which argue that the Chlorococcales, Chlorophyceae species are well distributed in different Brazilians aquatic systems. The Scenedesmaceae family will be addressed separately due to its high wealth of taxa. Key words: biodiversity, Dictyosphaerium, taxonomic RESUMO -(Chlorococcales (exceto Scenedesmaceae) de pesqueiros da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, SP, Brasil: levantamento fl orístico).
Aim: This paper describes some limnological variables of four reservoirs with different trophic status (Billings, Guarapiranga, Jundiaí and Paiva Castro) of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, Brazil, aiming to characterize the water quality in these reservoirs. Methods: Water sampling occurred between October 2011 and September 2012, on subsurface, at the pelagic compartment. Physical and chemical characteristics of water were evaluated, and the Trophic State Index (TSI) was calculated. Multivariate Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was used to ordinate sampling sites and periods in relation to environmental data. Results: Two reservoirs were classified as eutrophic (Billings and Guarapiranga), one as mesotrophic (Jundiaí) and one as oligotrophic (Paiva Castro). The highest concentrations of total phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorophyll a were recorded in the eutrophic reservoirs. The lowest values of dissolved oxygen concentration were registered at Guarapiranga reservoir. Residence time in Paiva Castro reservoir was very low (one day); on the other hand, the highest value was recorded in Billings reservoir: 428 days.
-(Population dynamics of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska) Seenayya & Subba Raju, a Cyanobacteria toxic species, in water supply reservoirs in São Paulo, Brazil). The Guarapiranga and Billings reservoirs are main sources of public water supply to millions of people in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. They have been under intense antropic action as a result of domestic, industrial, farm and livestock waste being dumped in the reservoirs. Cyanobacteria develop very well in such an environment, producing blooms that are most often toxic. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska) Seenayya & Subba Raju is a toxic species which is rapidly spreading all over the world and is abundant in the studied reservoirs. The goal of the study was to follow the year-round variation of the C. raciborskii population density and to correlate it with selected environmental factors. Samples were collected monthly on the surface of the water column and studied under a binocular optic microscope, whereas quantitative studies were carried out under an inverted microscope, according to the Utermöhl method. Among the phytoplankton community, organisms of the Cyanobacteria Class were represented by the greatest population density (cells mL -1 ). Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii was one of the abundant species in the Billings reservoir, both in the dry and rainy season. The principal environmental factors that influenced C. raciborskii population dynamics were water temperature, high pH values and low euphotic zone values.
