Background Oral cancer represents a worldwide public health problem, being among the most prevalent, associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. This systematic review aimed to review the causes of the delayed diagnosis of oral cancer mainly in the elderly, in developed and developing countries. Material and Methods Search strategy was developed for MEDLINE databases (via PubMed), EMBASE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and LILACS and for grey literature (Google Scholar, ProQuest and OpenGrey), without language or period restrictions. The risk of bias was assessed using instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute and the quality of evidence according to the GRADE system. Results The search resulted in 14,473 records, of which only 13 met the eligibility criteria. The total sample was 1,705 participants, with a predominance of males. All studies included reported causes of delayed diagnosis of oral cancer related to the patient and five also reported causes related to health professionals. The scarce knowledge of the population was pointed out as the main cause of delayed diagnosis of this cancer. Regarding the risk of bias, ten studies were classified as low risk and three, as moderate risk. The quality of the evidence was very low for the outcome related to delayed diagnosis of oral cancer. Conclusions Wide dissemination of information on oral cancer is needed, especially for the elderly, such as its initial signs and symptoms, in developed and developing countries. Further studies should be conducted to better understand the causes of delayed diagnosis of oral cancer in countries with different socioeconomic statuses. Key words: Delayed diagnosis, mouth neoplasms, oral neoplasm, aged.
Objective: To identify the scientific evidence about the educational technologies in health promotion for the elderly. Method: Integrative review study, which used the Medline databases via PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cinahl and Cochrane, from 2010 to 2019, submitted to a categorization by theme. Results: The search returned 303 articles on the databases and after reading the title and abstract, six articles were selected to compose the final sample. The educational technologies have emerged as tools in the health promotion of the elderly and qualification of caregivers. The videos (n=1), booklets (n=1) and group meetings (n=1) were the most widely accepted technologies by the elderly, however the applications for mobile devices and computers had greater acceptance by caregivers of the elderly (n=3). Moreover, the results highlighted the need for developing strategies to integrate innovative educational technologies in care and in public health policies, extending their scope in promoting the health of the elderly. Conclusions: There are various educational technologies used in the health promotion of the elderly. The knowledge of the profile of the target audience is necessary to ensure the selection of the adequate educational technology, and, in this way, to achieve its goal, providing autonomy and empowerment of this population.Descriptors: Educational technology; health promotion; aged.
Objective To analyze the nutritional interventions adopted in older people in palliative care found in the literature. Method A scoping review was conducted involving a search of the following databases: PubMed, LILACS, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE and of the gray literature through Google Scholar, OpenGrey and ProQuests & Theses Global, without restrictions on publication date or language. The searches were performed using the descriptors and keywords, combined using Boolean operators AND and OR: “Nutritional Intervention”, “Intervenção Nutricional”, “Palliative Care”, “Cuidados Paliativos”, “Aged” and “Idosos”. Results Of the 5,942 studies found, 13 studies were selected. The backward citation search strategy identified 13 additional studies, giving a final total of 26 studies. Nutritional interventions adopted in older people in palliative care predominantly comprised nutritional counseling, oral nutritional supplementation and artificial nutrition through enteral and parenteral nutrition. These interventions focused on quality of life, symptom management and nutritional status. Conclusion Although there are gaps in the literature regarding nutritional interventions for older adults in palliative care, the importance of the role of nutritionists in promoting quality of life and relieving suffering of this population is clear.
