ABSTRACTThis paper is a result of the extension project "Sustainable use of bamboo in construction: roof for bike rack at UFSC", executed in the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. With a practical approach, the objective was to disseminate knowledge among the community and members of the university, motivating more sustainable bamboo management habits for its application in small structures. In this text, the antecedents and the process of execution of the project are presented. The project was composed by three stages: bamboo harvesting and treatment; participatory project; prefabrication and assembly of the pergola in the university campus. Bamboo culms of the species Dendrocalamus asper and Phyllostachys aurea, originating Uso sostenible del bambú divulgado a través de actividades de extensión universitaria: proyecto y construcción de pérgola para bicicletario from clumps located inside the campus, were used. The constructive technique used provides quick assembly and easy maintenance of the structure.
Abstract:The Life Cycle Assessment of local building materials contributes to the development of databases that display and quantify the environmental impact of manufacture processes, use and disposal of each material. It is a support tool to make design decisions towards more sustainable architecture and construction processes. This paper presents a case of Life Cycle Inventory developed in a company situated in northwestern Pichincha; it is about the production process of bamboo Dendrocalamus asper treated stalks, which are used primarily as building structure. The method was developed in accordance with the ISO14042 procedures. The results indicate the environmental impact factors during the process; in this case the biggest impact comes from the fuel used during the transportation.
ABSTRACTBamboo is a building material from organic origin that has low natural durability. It is important to evaluate constructive elements and buildings in service that were built with it and know the real impact of biotic and abiotic factors on its durability. These kind of researches are incipient for bamboo; so it is necessary identify methods that are used for evaluating the durability of other materials such as timber. They could be analyzed, adapted and adjusted for bamboo constructions. As a starting point, this study was developed to review existing literature through a systematic search to identify the concepts and methodologies that could be applied in the evaluation of the durability of bamboo in buildings in service. A methodology used for the collection and analysis of data for the Systematic Research Flow (SSF). Interdisciplinary databases were used to identify the different areas in which the searches are performed, the most cited authors, the most frequently used non destructive tests and, as an emerging theme, the criticism of several of these authors to the prediction Method of life In ISO 15686.
