O conhecimento tradicional é um direito de propriedade intelectual e resulta de costumes, práticas e conhecimentos empíricos repassados de geração em geração pertencendo a toda comunidade, e sendo explorado por terceiros enseja o dever de repartição de benefícios. Dentre os objetivos do desenvolvimento sustentável da Agenda 2030 da ONU, destaca-se o da vida terrestre que tem como finalidade proteger, recuperar e promover o uso sustentável dos ecossistemas terrestres, gerir de forma sustentável as florestas, combater a desertificação, deter e reverter a degradação da terra e deter a perda de biodiversidade. Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar se a proteção dos conhecimentos tradicionais associados contribui para deter a perda da biodiversidade em cumprimento aos objetivos do desenvolvimento sustentável. Relativamente aos aspectos metodológicos, utiliza-se a abordagem qualitativa, com enfoque dedutivo na análise das informações, baseada em pesquisa documental e bibliográfica secundária de livros, artigos, legislação, estudos governamentais e privados, dentre outros. Entre os principais resultados afirma-se que em relação à meta associada aos conhecimentos tradicionais, apesar de haver um pequeno empenho por parte do Governo ela pouco tem contribuído na proteção dos direitos das comunidades tradicionais. Ademais, como considerações finais entende-se que para que os conhecimentos tradicionais e a biodiversidade sejam protegidos, é necessário que se tenha participação plena e efetiva das comunidades nas decisões.
