L'article se propose, dans un premier temps, de situer les nouveaux programmes de français pour le lycée dans l'histoire de l'enseignement du français au cours du XXe siècle. Dans un second temps, l'article entreprend d''expliquer les raisons majeures qui justifient l'élaboration de ces nouveaux programmes : cohérence entre collège et lycée, état des anciens programmes, nécessité d'une adaptation au public des lycéens et d'une actualisation des savoirs. Dans un troisième temps, l'article décrit les contenus de ces programmes, en explique les logiques et défend les valeurs qui sous-tendent l'ensemble.
