Os campi universitários por sua dimensão e cobertura vegetal desempenham o papel de parques urbanos, proporcionando benefícios sociais e ambientais para a cidade. Realizou-se um inventário quantitativo no Campus da Universidade Federal do Tocantins em Palmas, visando identificar e listar as espécies arbóreas. Foram identificados 2.553 indivíduos arbóreos pertencentes a 36 famílias e 114 espécies. Uma proporção representativa das espécies identificadas não refere-se a vegetação nativa local do Cerrado ou são espécies exóticas. Apesar da presença de extensas áreas desprovidas de arborização, a densidade de árvores no Campus foi considerada satisfatória e os conflitos entre a arborização e a infraestrutura construída foram pequenas. A má distribuição do arboreto foi o principal problema identificado no campus da UFT em Palmas-TO, no entanto, a área possui grande potencial para o adensamento arbóreo com espécies nativas e o desenvolvimento de práticas de educação ambiental visando melhorar o conforto térmico e aproximar a universidade da sociedade local.
