La recherche s'est déroulée dans deux centres de consultation de PMI. Elle a porté sur 30 enfants d'origine maghrébine âgés de 18 à 24 mois. Chaque enfant est observé deux fois : dans la salle d'attente où il dispose de nombreux jouets et dans une pièce isolée où il dispose d'un matériel standardisé (6 cubes, 6 boulettes et 6 bâtonnets). La première observation permet de décrire ses deux systèmes d'interaction : avec sa mère et avec les autres enfants. Chaque enfant se caractérise par l'un des quatre types de manipulation suivants : manipulation protégée, induite ou activée par la mère, ou manipulation autonome. La séquence de ses comportements permet aussi d'évaluer ses compétences sociales : stratégies de résolution et d'évitement des conflits qui l'opposent à ses pairs. La seconde observation permet d'évaluer les compétences cognitives que l'enfant mobilise pour résoudre les problèmes qu'il se pose au cours de la manipulation du matériel standardisé. Les compétences cognitives et sociales de Venfant sont étroitement liées à son type de manipulation : 1) Les enfants qui appartiennent aux types « M activée » et « autonome » obtiennent de meilleurs résultats que les autres au cours de la manipulation du matériel standardisé. 2) Ils manifestent également une supériorité fort nette quand au nombre et au niveau des stratégies qu'ils utilisent dans leurs négociations avec les autres enfants. 3) Ce sont les enfants du type « M activée » qui manifestent la plus grande activité exploratoire au cours de la manipulation du matériel standardisé.
Résumé Une fonction miroir semble jouer un rôle central dans la cognition sociale des primates. Cette fonction serait une propriété réfléchissante de certaines structures cérébrales (neurones miroirs) ou une propriété de l’activité posturale (H. Wallon). Ces deux points de vue sont confrontés et discutés. Dans les deux cas, en effet, cette propriété du système moteur rendrait possibles la compréhension d’autrui, de ses actions et de ses intentions, l’imitation du partenaire et le partage des émotions. D’un autre côté, certaines pathologies, comme l’autisme, pourraient s’expliquer par une perturbation dans le développement de cette fonction miroir ou par un dysfonctionnement des différentes représentations motrices.
La régulation posturale et la réalisation d'un équilibre sensori-tonique rendent possibles les interactions d'un individu avec son milieu physique et social. Le développement de l'enfant obéit à une loi d'alternance fonctionnelle (phases centripète et centrifuge). Son activité est réglée par une « balance » qui équilibre ces deux orientations : autocentration et exocentration. Nous faisons l'hypothèse que l'autisme se caractérise par un trouble de la régulation posturale. La recherche a porté sur 4 enfants autistes diagnostiqués sur la base de I'adi et de la cim 10. Ils sont âgés de 5 à 7 ans et leur niveau de développement cognitif se situe entre 14 et 30 mois ( Brunet-Lézine ) . Chaque enfant a été vu deux fois : 1 /bilan sen- sori-moteur : vigilance et attention, utilisation du milieu humain, traitement des flux sensoriels et contrôle représentatif ; 2 / tâche de manipulation en présence d'un adulte, puis avec lui (cubes et bâtonnets). Les résultats montrent que : 1 / La régulation posturale de ces enfants présente des particularités qui la distinguent nettement de celle de quatre enfants appariés non- autistes ; 2 / Chaque enfant se caractérise par une «formule globale » (qualité de l'équilibre sensori-tonique et modalités de régulation posturale) ; 3 / Cette formule est en relation avec son degré d 'autocentration et avec la complexité des constructions qu'il réalise seul ou avec l'adulte ; 4 / Ces enfants se distinguent par leur capacité à utiliser les interventions de l'adulte à des fins de décentration.
La recherche a porté sur la compétence sociale des enfants de 4-5 ans (72 enfants, moyenne section de l'école maternelle). Chaque enfant a fait l'objet d'une triple évaluation : 1 / évaluation de ses compétences cognitives (k-abc : connaissances et processus mentaux) ; 2 / évaluation du niveau de ses comportements adaptatifs ( Vineland abs) ; 3 / évaluation des compétences qu 'il mobilise au cours de ses activités ludiques observées dans la cour de récréation (participation aux jeux collectifs moteurs et symboliques). Une analyse factorielle révèle une organisation cognitive de la compétence sociale. Elle permet de dégager deux facteurs : 1 /un facteur d'intelligence pratique, intelligence qui est mobilisée dans la construction d'une conformité sociale (comportements socialement valorisés) ; 2 / un facteur d'intelligence sociale, intelligence qui est mobilisée dans les situations qui exigent un ajustement à l'autre (négociation et partage de significations).
