As one of the most interesting episodes from the famous sci-fi British TV series Black Mirror, "San Junipero" warrants analysis, specifically from the perspective of science and technology. Nevertheless, gender and LGBT issues have not commonly been explored in sci-fi content like Black Mirror. Through an analysis on the mise-en-scène, or cinematographic elements (setting, color, costume, camera work, and performance), and the representation of queer characters in the media, this article attempts to identify whether the episode, as a queer narrative-dubbed "a celebration of queerness" by the fans-is really free from any heteronormativity elements. The study found that heteronormativity is still depicted in the episode because stereotypes of queer characters are still used to some degree in portraying the lesbian characters. As a heterotopia, according to Foucault [1], the establishment of the queer characters in "San Junipero" also fits Rich's [2] theory on compulsory heteronormativity. Nevertheless, not all aspects of the episode suggest pure heteronormativity. It must be admitted that there are some efforts to create an empowering queer narrative through the establishment of a non-stereotypical identity in the female-female relationship.
Characters in a movie often use idioms in various situations to express certain ideas. However, translating idioms can be challenging for translators making the movie subtitle. This descriptive-qualitative research aims to examine the types of idioms that appear in Game Night movie (2018) and compare the strategies used in the fansub and the official subtitle of the movie in translating idiomatic expressions. The data analyzed in this research consist of all the idioms that appear in the movie and their Indonesian translations. The results of this study show that English phrasal compounds constitute the most frequently used type of idiom. Meanwhile, the most used translation strategy in both the fansub and the official subtitle is the translation by paraphrase strategy. Despite the application of the same strategy, there are still some differences in the translations of the same idioms between the two subtitles. Meanwhile, other translation strategies are used in different frequencies. Overall, the study finds the official subtitle to be more communicative than the fansub translation.KEYWORDS: Idiom, Translation Strategies, Fansub, Official Subtitle, Game Night
Different versions of translations of the same source text can be published and republished by the same publisher over the span of years. The differences between the two translated versions can reflect the changing attitude and translation ideology of the commission. This paper examines and discusses the differences between two Indonesian translations of Doraemon manga series commissioned and published by Elex Media Komputindo in the early 1990s and the early 2010s. The study investigates whether there is any translation ideology shift over a two decades-period and whether the ideology adopted in the two translations implies any sociocultural or sociohistorical information. To that purpose, the study focuses on comparing the translations of cultural-specific items (CSIs) in both versions. The findings show that in some cases, the two translations employ different strategies to translate CSIs, with the older translations (OT) tend to adopt domestication ideology to some extent, and the newer translations (NT) almost consistently adopt foreignization ideology. While the shift to foreignization in the NT may reflect the shift of attitude and perspective of Indonesians towards Japanese culture post-World War II era, the domestication adopted by the OT can give a small glimpse of Indonesian sociocultural conditions in the early 1990s.
Song lyric translation is important because in these recent decades people can access songs worldwide. The aim of this research is to gain an understanding of the difference between singable translations made by an Indonesian translator and a foreign translator by investigating what translation procedures and methods occur in two translated songs from Indonesian to English using qualitative descriptive method. The result of this research indicates that the singable translation made by a foreign translator is more identical to the source language (SL) compared to the one made by an Indonesian translator. However, despite the differences, the two translated songs share something in common, for instance the singability and the length of lyrics. Taking the findings into consideration, it could be said that the foreign translator is more faithful to the source text (ST), while the Indonesian translator emphasizes the target language (TL) more.
