Bluetongue (BT), caused by bluetongue virus (BTV), is a vector-borne disease of small ruminants that has the potential to spread across international borders. Despite large populations of susceptible animals and borders with BTV endemic countries, little is known of the disease burden and prevalent serotypes in the province of Balochistan in Pakistan. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine seroconversion and prevalent serotypes in selected districts of the province using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Sera (n = 876) were collected from clinically healthy sheep and goats originating from the districts of Quetta (n = 300), Mastung (n = 201), Killa Saifullah (n = 75) and Kech (n = 300). None of the study herds (n = 97) were seronegative for BTV, and at the individual level, the overall prevalence of BTV seroconversion was 47.26% (n = 414/876, 95% CI = 43.92%-50.63%). A higher percentage of goats (50.87%, 95% CI = 45.99%-55.73%) were seropositive for anti-VP7 immunoglobulins (IgG) than sheep (44.21%, 95% CI = 39.81%-48.70%). Odds ratios of seroconversion for goats were associated with breed type (χ = 16.84, p = .01), parity (χ = 23.66, p = .00) and presence of vector (χ = 2.63, p = .10), whereas for sheep, it was associated with breed type (χ = 13.80, p = .01) and parity (χ = 53.40, p = .00). Serotype 8 was the most prevalent (26.82%, 95% CI = 14.75%-43.21%) followed by an equal prevalence of serotypes 2 and 9 (7.31%, 95% CI = 1.91%-21.01%). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study conducted in Balochistan province and the results indicate that there is a necessity to initiate intervention strategies to control BT disease burden not only in this region of Pakistan but also in adjacent areas of the neighbouring countries, Iran and Afghanistan.
We have evaluated the effects of different fish feeds on the body composition, growth, and enzyme activities of Labeo rohita (Rohu). In total, 240 fishes between the average weights of 24.77±2.15g were studied. The treatments were applied in a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments of 60 fishes each. Treatments consisted of four different fish feeds [Oryza (T1), AMG (T2), Aqua (T3), and Supreme (T4)]. Body composition, growth performance, and enzyme activities were evaluated. There was a significant variation in performance of fishes fed with different type of feed; as fishes having Oryza feed showed the highest weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and best feed conversion ratio (FCR) as compared to other groups that were considered to be significant (P ≤ 0.05). High net weight gain was obtained in T4 when compared with T2 and T3. FCR value of T4 was less than T1 but higher than T2, T3 and T2, which showed the lowest values. The specific growth rate was recorded as average in T4, but T2 led a high SGR than T3. Similarly, crude protein level and digestive enzymes activity was recorded significantly highest in fed with Oryza (T1) as compared to AMG (T2), Aqua (T3), and Supreme (T4). Water quality parameters were recorded significant in all treatments except pH and DO of treatment (T1), significantly different from other treatments. It was concluded that Rohu (Labeo rohita) could show a promising growth rate and protease enzyme activity when fed with the Oryza feed of 25% protein.
<p>Indonesia is one country in the world exporters of tuna in the form of fresh, frozen and<br />processed. Tuna exported in processed form large enough to leave waste for exporting companies.<br />The purpose of this study was to determine a feasibility study on solid waste exported tuna loin for<br />raw material diversification. This research was conducted in Majene Makassar Strait. The study was<br />conducted using descriptive exploratory method by taking a sample of 3 times and each sample<br />was tested 3 times resulting in 9 times of testing for each of the observed variables. Chemical test<br />which includes moisture, protein, fat, ash, carbohydrates, and histamine. Microbiological test that<br />is E. coli, Salmonella and the total number of bacteria. Data were analyzed by descriptive qualitative<br />and quantitative display via Tables, Graphics and Image in the form of average value. The results<br />showed that the chemical solid waste tuna loin has a water content ranged from 78.34 to 78.78%,<br />protein content ranged from 14.32 to 16.41%, fat ranged from 1.56 to 1.66%, ash content ranged<br />from 5.18 to 5. 58%, carbohydrate content ranged from 1.29 to 1.34%, and histamine ranged from<br />2.08 to 3.21 mg / kg. Solid waste microbiologically tuna loin contains E.coli range from 1.2 to 1.9<br />(<2), Salmonella negative and TPC ranged from 1.4 to 1.8 x 105 kol/g. The results of chemical and<br />microbiological testing showed solid waste tuna loin still suitable as raw material diversification<br />products.</p>
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana pengaruh penggunaan subtitusi tepung daun kelor sebagai pakan terhadap sintasan dan konversi pakan benih ikan Nila (Oreocrhomis niloticus). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Balai Benih Ikan Pangkajene Kabupaten Sidenreng Rappang Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan. Penelitian menggunakan keramba waring yang ditempatkan secara acak dalam satu kolam. Perlakuan terdiri atas 5 perlakuan, yaitu 100% pakan komersil dengan subtitusi tepung daun kelor terdiri dari 25%, 50%, 75% dan 100%. Parameter yang diukur adalah sintasan dan konversi pakan benih ikan Nila. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan penggunaan subtitusi tepung daun kelor 75% diperoleh nilai tertinggi untuk sintasan (99%) dan terendah pada konversi pakan (1,22 g). Penggunaan subtitusi tepung daun kelor memberi hasil terbaik untuk sintasan dan konversi pakan benih ikan Nila yaitu dengan kandungan tepung daun kelor sebesar 75%. Disarankan untuk tidak melebih batas penggunaan subtitusi tepung daun kelor agar memberikan pertumbuhan yang baik pada benih ikan Nila.
