The flower bud abortion is one of the main problems that limit commercial pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) production in the southern region of Brazil. Insufficient chilling during the dormancy period is known as the main factor of this problem. One of the hypotheses to explain this problem is that the starch mobilization and carbohydrate fluxes to the buds are impeded when mild temperatures occurred during winter. This study compared the total soluble sugars (TSS) and reducing sugars (RS) concentrations, the cell wall acid invertase (CWAI -EC 3.2.1.26) and sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS -EC 2.4.1.14) activities in wood of branches and floral buds of Japanese pear trees cv. Housui, grafted on Pyrus calleryana and submitted to chilling conditions during the dormancy period. Treatments were: (i) natural conditions; (ii) continuous artificial chilling; (iii) alternating temperatures, and (iv) total chilling privation. TSS and RS contents, as well as CWAI and SPS activities in tissues of branches that received insufficient chilling were lower than those that received sufficient chilling during winter. The starch concentration was superior in wood tissues of branches kept under chilling privation. The chilling privation disturbs carbohydrate mobilization in pear trees, reducing the sucrose synthesis capacity in wood tissues (source) and sucrose importation by the floral buds (sink).
ABSTRACT:In this study, we aimed to provide information about the use of silicates in plant cultivation. Although silicon (Si) is one of the most abundant elements found in most soils in substantial quantities, various classes of soils, mainly the sandy ones, present low amounts of available Si in their upper horizons. In these soils, some plants such as sugarcane and rice, which have keen ability to accumulate Si in their tissues, can respond favorably to silicon fertilization. Silicates behave similarly to calcium and magnesium carbonates in soil, promoting chemical reactions similar to those induced by limestone, including pH increase, precipitation of toxic aluminum (Al 3+ ) and manganese (Mn 2+ ), increase of exchangeable calcium and magnesium and base saturation levels, and reduction of Al 3+ saturation, with the additional benefit of increasing Si levels in soils. Si benefits to plants are related mainly with increasing their resistance to attacks by insect pests, nematodes and diseases, and with reducing their transpiration rate, which provides further tolerance to water stress during periods of low soil moisture.
Water content in pear tree tissues during the dormancy period under mild winter conditionsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the water content (WC) in different tissues of the Kieffer (Pyrus communis) and Housui (Pyrus pyrifolia) pear cultivars during dormancy, under mild winter conditions. Plants from to the experimental orchard of Embrapa Clima Temperado, Pelotas, RS, Brazil, were evaluated. A completely randomized block design, in a 3x4x5 factorial arrangement, consisting of three tissues (bud, bark and wood), four portions of branches (terminal, median, axial and spurs) and five sampling dates in 2005 (7/1, 8/3, 9/6, 9/23 and 10/13), distributed in split-plots, with three replicates, was used. There was a WC increase in the wood of the Kieffer cultivar until the middle of the dormancy period and a subsequent decrease after this phase, which could be attributed to the increase in WC observed in buds after the satisfaction of chilling requirement and dormancy. In the cultivar Housui, unsatisfactory chilling requirement, associated with the occurrence of high temperatures during the winter, reflected in the reduction of WC and in bud dehydration during dormancy. Water dynamics in pear tree tissues is directly influenced by cold accumulation during dormancy period and depends on the cold requirement of each cultivar.Index terms: Pyrus communis, Pyrus pyrifolia, floral bud abortion, budbreak, dehydration, cold requirement.
Biomass quality is important to strengthen the use of species as reliable energy sources. This study aimed to characterize the energy quality attributes of bamboo species (Bambusa vulgaris, Bambusa tuldoides, Dendrocalamus giganteus and Guadua angustifolia) biomass, when compared to other raw materials of residual origin with a high potential for use in thermal energy generation processes (rice husk, eucalyptus chips, coconut husk and fiber). The basic density, higher calorific value and fiber, lignin and ash contents were evaluated. All the evaluated bamboo species present energy quality characteristics equivalent to those of biomasses traditionally used in thermal energy generation, such as high energy density (2,415-2,967 Mcal m-3), high calorific power (4,359-4,568 kcal kg-1), high basic density (0.537-0.653 g cm-3) and low ash content (1.41-2.41 %). The bamboo biomasses of the four evaluated species present adequate characteristics as fuel for thermal energy generation processes, with potential for use in several industrial sectors.
-Temperature is the main climate factor related to induction, maintenance and dormancy release in apple (Malus domestica Borkh.). The inadequate chilling exposure in apples causes budbreak problems, resulting in decrease in yield potential. Thus, the knowledge of physiological principles and environmental factors determining the dormancy phenomenon, especially winter temperature effects, it is necessary for the efficient selection of cultivars in a productive region. In addition, it is indispensable to adapt the orchard management aiming to decrease the problems caused by lack chilling during winter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different thermal conditions during the dormancy period on budbreak of apple cultivars. One-year-old twigs of 'Castel Gala' and 'Royal Gala' cultivars, grafted on M7 rootstock, were submitted to temperatures of 5, 10 and 15ºC for different exposure periods (168; 336; 672; 1,008 and 1,344 hours). After treatments execution, the plants were kept in a greenhouse at 25ºC. Budbreak was quantified when accumulated 3,444; 6,888; 10,332; 13,776; 17,220 and 20,664 GDHºC after temperature treatments. The cultivars responded differently to temperature effect during the winter period. The temperature of 15°C during winter shows a greater effectiveness on 'Castel Gala' apple budbreak while in the 'Royal Gala' apples the temperatures of 5 and 10ºC show better performance. 'Castel Gala' cultivar (low chilling requirement) may supply its physiological necessities, may be capable to budburst, even when subjected to higher temperatures in relation to 'Royal Gala' apples (high chilling requirement). Index terms: Malus domestica, dormancy, chilling requirement, grafted twigs, apical dominance. A brot...
PEROXIDASE ACTIVITY DURING THE REST PERIOD OF PEACH TREES (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) cv. JUBILEU IN PLANTS WITH AND WITHOUT SYMPTOMS OF PEACH-TREE-SHORT-LIFE (PTSL)ABSTRACT: Peach Tree Short Life (PTSL) is a syndrome characterized by a collapse of the peach trees (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) during the fl owering, or in the beginning of the bud break period, after a drastic reduction of the temperature. The aim of the present work was to determine the peroxidase activity (UE min -1 g -1 MF) during the dormancy period in buds and twigs tissues of peach trees cv. Jubileu with and without PTSL symptoms. Two experiments were conducted separately, one for each appraised tissue, in two peach orchards with four years of implantation, both located in the colonial region of Pelotas, RS, in the Santa Helena and Cascata districts. The tissues consisted in buds and twigs collected in four dates during the dormancy period (June 11 th , July 11 th, July 29 th , and August 05 th ) in 2003. The peroxidase activity determinations were carried out at the Vegetal Physiology Laboratory of Embrapa Clima Temperado. The plants with symptoms of...
