Syzygium jambos belonging to familyMyrtaceae is a tree originated in Southeast Asia. Syzygium jambos is a medium sized tree upto 15 metres height with a low branching tendency. The edible fruit is guava shaped with thin, waxy skin which is extremely sensitive and has a pleasant floral aroma. They are eaten fresh or processed into jellies and jams, as they have high levels of pectin. The tree is rich in tannins that are of some antimicrobial interest. The ash content of rose apple is 0.144%, 0.132% protein, 0.002% fibre, 0.66% fat and 4.10% total soluble solid.
The desire of convenience for handling, storage, transportation and maintaining the shelf life of perishable foods, a concept to packaging was developed. Historians believe that during the nomadic days, materials such as nuts or gourds, leaves and animal skins were used to store and transport items. With an ongoing day to day development in packaging features such as active and intelligent packaging, the raw material being used has also been improvised. Single use of plastics has become an integral part of our daily life which makes our life easier but has also been responsible for polluting the environment and creating imbalance to our ecosystem. There has been a continuous interest for developing and using biodegradable packing material to mitigate the damage and lead today's society in a sustainable way. In search of sustainable practices we have also come across through mycelium based packaging material designed by Evocative design, which can be grown quickly on the agricultural waste and are capable of replacing the polystyrene with their characteristics such as capability of moulding, biodegradability, insulation and shock absorbing properties.
Wood apple fruit is a hard shelled many seeded berry with its pinkish brown aromatic soursweet pulp being the edible portion. Total eleven (11) numbers of wood apple plants were stratified from different agroclimatic zones of West Bengal depending on availability of fruit crop and convenience of the study at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, Nadia, West Bengal during the years 2013-2015. Under the observation for characterization, the plant physical parameters has been analyzed with the help of Biodiversity International Tropical Fruit Descriptor (NBPGR) and so for preliminary evaluation, fruit physical parameters and fruit biochemical parameters has been analyzed. During the course of survey the tree age of wood apple varied from 15yrs to above 40yrs in age at different germplasm in which the height and trunk girth varied from 10m to above 20m and 88.2 cm to 157.4 cm. Branching pattern and crown shape was observed to be irregular in all the accessions whereas, tree growth habit varied from erect to spreading type. Leaf characters in wood apple reveals obovate leaf blade shape, obtuse to retuse leaf apex, cuneate leaf base, odd pinnate leaf orientation and pinnate leaf venation. Length of the leaf blade ranges from 3.05 cm to 4.12 cm and breadth varies from 1.06 cm to 3.08 cm. Maximum fruit length was recorded in ACC-8 (8.04 cm) and breadth of 7.96 cm in ACC-6. Maximum fruit weight (306.02 g), peel weight (73.68 g) and number of seeds (28.42) was from the ACC-4. Maximum total sugar 28.57 mg/100 gm pulp (ACC-1), reducing sugar 13.88 mg/100 gm (ACC-4), acidity 1.77 mg/100 gm (ACC-5) and Vit. C 102.04 mg/100 gm (ACC-2) has been recorded. Average linkage technique clustering when applied on squared Euclidean distance matrix a total of 6 clusters were formed for plant physical parameters, a total of 7 clusters were formed for fruit physical parameters and a total of 6 clusters were formed for fruit biochemical parameters.
For a well-balanced diet, vegetables are considered as essential source of minerals, vitamins, dietary fiber and phytochemicals. A unique combination and amount of these vitamins and minerals are present in different vegetables, which make them separate from each other. Vegetables have a strong association in improving the gastrointestinal health, vision, chronic diseases and varioustypes of cancer. Vegetables being rich in antioxidants are involved in our daily diet. A balanced diet contributes to solve many nutrition related problems and different vegetables offer distinct level of protection to humans against diseases. Now-a-days, the focus is not only on the quantity but also on the quality of vegetable products, which further coincides with the consumer demand for healthy produce. An individual must includes a diverse type of vegetable in diet to get a combination of phytonutraceuticals to lead a healthy life. This article goes through a review and discuss about the nutritive value and health benefits with respect to vegetables. Further, in future research work is to be carried out involving food scientists and biomedical researchers to know about the exact constituents of different vegetables related to phytonutraceuticals.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
