Este ensaio aborda o tema da coerção e do controle, amplamente tratado no campo dos estudos críticos em Administração, privilegiando o espaço físico. Porém o faz numa perspectiva alternativa: toma a evolução histórica da espacialidade teatral e estabelece analogias com a espacialidade nas organizações. Para tanto, são analisados o anfiteatro grego, o teatro de Roma, os palcos medievais, o palco italiano e, adicionalmente, a sala de cinema. O objetivo é argumentar que no espaço físico controla-se, pedagogicamente, o olhar do indivíduo para que propósitos políticos, econômicos e culturais sejam realizados. Tal acontece tanto pelo emprego de modos coercitivos e diretos de controle quanto de modos normativos, mais sutis. O presente estudo se propôs a investigar as motivações que levaram os proprietários de uma empresa familiar, o Grupo Nova América, a atuar de forma socialmente responsável. A empresa dedica-se há quase 150 anos à agricultura, à pecuária e à agroindústria, tendo, hoje, na produção de açúcar e álcool sua principal atividade. Elegeu-se como método de pesquisa a historiografia, mais precisamente, a história de empresas, tendo como linha de análise a questão da responsabilidade social. Imbricada com a história da empresa está a história de vida de Olga, que fornece o título a este artigo. Os dados foram coletados por meio de pesquisas bibliográfica, documental e de campo. Neste, entrevistas provocaram narrativas. A história do Grupo Nova América revela: (a) uma organização reconhecida por seu comportamento socialmente responsável, o qual remonta aos primórdios do Grupo, sendo o resultado dos valores e crenças de Olga Ottoni de Rezende Barbosa, mãe e avó dos atuais dirigentes; (b) uma mulher e administradora à frente do seu tempo, cujos valores e crenças eram impregnados por componentes éticos; (c) valores e crenças de dirigentes como fontes de aprendizagem para a organização; (d) ser possível a busca da competitividade e do lucro, com responsabilidade social.
RESUMO A presente pesquisa foi motivada pela disseminação de iniciativas voltadas para a gestão do conhecimento no ambiente empresarial, como as chamadas Universidades Corporativas (UC), consideradas uma evolução da tradicional área de Treinamento & Desenvolvimento. Questiona-se, contudo, se tais universidades oferecem aos seus participantes subsídios para refletir, criticar, criar, agir em todas as ações inseridas no escopo da educação, ou se, ao contrário, optam pela doutrinação. Foi este questionamento crítico que desencadeou o estudo aqui apresentado, suportado por pesquisa bibliográfica e de campo. Esta última foi realizada em uma UC brasileira. Contou com a participação de 103 funcionários da empresa. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionário fechado, elaborado com base nas teorias de doutrinação de Ivan Snook e Olivier Reboul. Os resultados desta pesquisa revelaram que a UC pesquisada tem poucas características doutrinárias. Essa circunstância, de certa forma, fere a suposição inicial do estudo, porém suscita outras, ao seu final: a) nesta UC não predomina a doutrinação e o fato de abrir-se para a pesquisa já o afirma; b) por ser uma UC do setor público, a doutrinação não se faz presente, tanto quanto se faz em uma empresa privada; c) a UC pesquisada tem caráter doutrinário, porém na era do conhecimento em que vivemos, as formas de doutrinação são sutis; não raro os doutrinados não as percebem. Uma nova agenda de pesquisa poderá ajudar a confirmar ou não essas suposições.
