Given the specifi c geographical location of Osijek, with its proximity to as many as three national borders, and considering its historical heritage, i.e. the infl uence of foreign languages due to sociopolitical circumstances, viz. German, Turkish, Hungarian, this paper aims to investigate the extent to which the elements of foreign languages are represented in the contemporary urban vernacular of the City of Osijek. To this end, research included 200 participants who have lived in Osijek since birth, classifi ed into two age groups: 100 participants aged from 15 to 25, and 100 participants aged from 25 aged 45 to 55. Th e analysis aims to show the prevalent infl uences on the urban vernacular of Osijek, as well as to establish if age diff erence determines its use.
The polysemy of suffixes -ač and -aš in CroatianUnlike the study of polysemy on the lexical level, the polysemy of word formation units still remains understudied in Croatian linguistics. The present paper concentrates on the polysemous suffixes -ač and -aš, since it is the derivations by these suffixes that prove most numerous in the corpus of new Croatian words. Apart from listing the most frequent semantic categories that the words derived by the suffixes -ač and -aš belong to, the paper analyzes the bases used to form new words by means of the two suffixes and their structure. Since the semantic fields of words derived by the suffixes -ač and -aš partly overlap e.g. “agent” dodavač and softveraš, the paper will address the share of the two suffixes in the process of forming new words and try to predict the future direction of semantic changes involving the suffixes -ač and -aš.Polisemia sufiksu -ač i -aš w języku chorwackimW odróżnieniu od polisemii na poziomie leksykalnym w językoznawstwie chorwackim polisemia jednostek słowotwórczych wciąż pozostaje obszarem niezbadanym. W niniejszej pracy uwaga została poświęcona polisemicznym sufi ksom -ač i -aš, ponieważ wyrazy pochodne właśnie z tymi przyrostkami są najliczniejsze w korpusie nowych wyrazów chorwackich.
Pandemic-related neologism formation. Great changes in the extralinguis-tic world have always spawned neologisms. The more intense the changes, the greater the number of new words or the number of new senses of existing words. A linguistic response to the changes in our lives caused by the corona-virus pandemic is an increased number of neologisms, which are being created on a daily basis. The aim of this paper is to analyse the pandemic-related lexicon. The corpus has been collected from the media discourse. The analysis focuses on the word-formation level, i.e. the ways neologisms are formed: portmanteaus: morona virus, cov-idiot, capakistan (from Capak, the Croatian epidemiologist, and the suffix –istan as in Pakistan), paketomat (paket = package, parcel + automat = automatic machine, e.g. ATM), McGužva (Mc as in McDonald's + gužva = rush, crowd) ‒ words with bound lexical bases: koronamanija (coronamania), koronafobija (coronafobia), kupomanija (kupovati = to buy + manija = mania) ‒ and productive word-formation affixes: koronaš (≈coronaman), koronašica (≈coronawoman), koronizacija (coronisation9), koronizirati (to coronise), turis-tificirati (to touristify). In addition to the word-formation level, the paper analyses the normative level, specifically, the orthographic level, i.e. problems related to irregularities in writing of the new words: korona virus / korona-virus / koronavirus.
