Foi realizada uma Revisão da Literatura nos períodos de 2011 a 2021 por meio de Pesquisa Bibliográfica visando atualização do estado da arte sobre automedicação da população idosa e a atuação do farmacêutico. A pesquisa foi realizada nas bases de dados PubMed/Medline, SciELO, LILACS e Google Scholar, utilizando os seguintes descritores de saúde: automedicação, autoadministração, efeitos adversos, hábitos de consumo de medicamentos, medicamentos, farmacêutico, atenção farmacêutica, idosos e pessoa idosa. De maneira geral, foi possível perceber que as pesquisas encontradas nas buscas iniciais, tinham como objetivo a investigação da automedicação de forma bem abrangente, nos mais diversos estratos da população brasileira, porém, a presente pesquisa se restringiu à população idosa que de maneira indiscriminada utiliza medicamentos para o alívio de sintomas, de suas dores e na busca da cura de suas comorbidades relacionadas com a idade, assim como, culturalmente, compartilham remédios com a família ou círculo de amizade, utiliza os restos de medicações encontradas em casa que muitas vezes descumprem a prescrição profissional. Portanto, pode-se dizer que a automedicação é uma prática considerada evitável, por isso, acredita-se que programas voltados à educação dos idosos podem contribuir em ações que visem esclarecer a população idosa em relação ao uso racional de medicamentos, assim, destacando a importância da atuação dos farmacêuticos que são responsáveis pelo controle, orientação e prevenção da automedicação, os riscos e benefícios do idoso em consumir de forma indiscriminada qualquer medicamento, sobretudo daqueles isentos de prescrição.
