A cardiopatia congênita (CC) é o nome dado às anormalidades presentes na estrutura ou função do coração ou grandes vasos e o diagnóstico causa grande impacto aos pais, em consequência de tratamentos invasivos recorrentes, cirurgia e maior risco de óbito do filho. O preparo para uma cirurgia, trata-se de um procedimento de alta complexidade e necessita que o paciente esteja em condições clínicas aceitáveis para sua realização. Objetivo: Relatar a experiência de orientação aos pais de crianças com CC à espera da cirurgia cardíaca, focando na influência de cuidados para bom prognostico pós-operatório. Método: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, de abordagem qualitativa na modalidade de relato de experiência, realizado no projeto de extensão: ‘AMIGOS DO CORAÇÃO’ em um hospital universitário. Resultados: Percebeu-se que os participantes se sentiram acolhidos e enfatizaram a importância das orientações, relataram ter mais segurança para lidar com a doença e o procedimento cirúrgico. Conclusão: Torna-se evidente que as atividades no projeto proporcionaram benefícios para o acolhimento hospitalar, conhecimento sobre a CC, proporcional qualidade de vida, e diversos outros aspectos na vida dos pacientes e sua família.
