Hypoeutectic high chromium white cast irons are commonly used in the mining and cement industries, where high resistance to abrasive wear is demanded. Through the application of a Design of Experiment technique (DoE), different factors related to thermal industrial treatments are analysed with regard to resistance to abrasive wear and impact response. Abrasion tests were carried out in accordance with the ASTM G065-16 standard. The provisional results show that to increase wear resistance, high destabilisation temperatures (1050 °C) followed by slow cooling to room temperature (RT) and subsequent tempering at 400 °C are most favourable. This is because these conditions are favourable to maintaining a certain tetragonality of the martensite after tempering and also, because of the presence of a high density of mixed carbides M7C3, through a secondary precipitation during cooling. Oil quenching and a high tempering temperature (550 °C) with long dwell times of 6 h were found to increase impact toughness. These conditions favour a lack of retained austenite. The presence of retained austenite was found unfavourable for both wear resistance and toughness, whereas tempering at 400 °C has been shown to be insufficient to transform martensite on tempering, which in turn seemed to increase the hardness of the matrix constituent.
Reactive power is an important parameter in electrical power systems since it affects the efficiency of the system because it is not useful energy. It decreases the power factor of the system and limits the ability of generators to deliver useful power. It is therefore necessary to understand and correctly measure the phenomenon of reactive energy in three-phase systems. In this paper, we analyze reactive power in linear and unbalanced three-phase systems using the Unified Theory of Electrical Power and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standard 1459-2010 (IEEE Std. 1459-2010) to obtain expressions for reactive power in balanced and unbalanced systems and noting that there are terms that exist only for unbalanced systems. Analysis of the measurements carried out led us to identify the existence of two components of reactive power—that due to reactive elements, and that caused by unbalances in the system. Knowing the causes that generate reactive power, it is possible to act more effectively on the problem and therefore achieve a more sustainable generation of electric power and a lower environmental impact.
In this study, a comparative analysis of the fatigue behavior of four types of steels, three of quenching and tempering (30MnB5 subjected to two different heat treatments and 41CrS4) and one microalloyed (30MnVS6), was carried out. The objective of the study is to determine if it is feasible to replace the quenching and tempering steel traditionally used in the manufacture of commercial vehicle axles (30MnB5) with alternative ones with the same composition but with modifications in their microstructure that improve their mechanical properties; a quenched and tempered chromium steel (41CrS4) and one that is microalloyed (30MnVS6). For this, rotary-bending fatigue tests have been carried out on the four types of steels with different stress levels. The fatigue resistance of quenched and tempered steels and microalloyed steel was evaluated using the fit of Basquin’s experimental data. Where possible, the fatigue limit was determined using the maximum likelihood method. It was concluded that, in general, the fatigue resistance of chromium-alloyed steel is higher than that of the reference steel, while the rest have lower fatigue resistance. On the other hand, it was determined that the fatigue limit of microalloyed steel is higher than the reference one and that of the reference steel is higher than that of the other two steels.
Light emitting diode (LED) and compact fluorescent light (CFL) lamps are widely used because they are associated with low energy consumption and a reduced environmental impact. In the present paper, a study of the real consumption of these devices has been carried out. To do this, the active, reactive, distortion and apparent power and electrical efficiency for various lamps have been measured and calculated. The distortions produced in the network provoke the consumed energy to be in the order of 50–75% higher than that which appears in the commercial characteristics. This situation means that for its operation, it is necessary to generate and distribute an amount of energy much higher than that which is declared as the consumption of these lamps, and so far, this amount of energy is neither quantified nor invoiced. Additionally, groups of lamps have also been studied to check whether, when working together on the same network, there is a compensation phenomenon that reduces the negative effects of individual lamps. We have found that this compensation effect does not occur for the type of devices evaluated.
This paper defines a methodology for the economic feasibility analysis of a floating offshore wind farm composed of tensioned leg platforms, which are part of the EU ARCWIND research project. In this context, the phases and subphases of its life-cycle process are considered to deal with aspects such as bathymetry, characteristics of the platforms, distance from the farm to shore, distance from the farm to port and offshore wind speed. All the costs and other external parameters such as capital cost, electric tariff, interest rate, percentage of financing and corporate tax have been analysed to calculate the internal rate of return, net present value, discounted pay-back period and levelized cost of energy of the farm. This work studies a farm composed of TLP offshore wind platforms designed by CENTEC and located at Ribadeo in Spain. Results indicate the costs and the economic feasibility of this platform for deep waters. They indicate that the platform is economically feasible for the location selected.
Hypoeutectic white cast irons with a high chrome content are commonly used in the industrial mining sector where there is a demand for both high resistance to adhesive wear and an acceptable toughness for the absorption of impacts and falls of diverse materials. Through the application of a design of experiment (DoE) technique, factors related to thermal treatment are analyzed with respect to resistance to sliding wear, maximum rupture stress and toughness. The results show that, in order to increase resistance to adhesive wear, it is convenient to use destabilization temperatures of 1050 °C and tempering of two hours at 400 °C. This foments a very hard martensite and a high proportion of highly alloyed retained austenite, which, with low tempering, achieves a precipitation of carbides from this austenite with hardly any loss of hardness of the martensite. In order to increase the energy which this material is capable of absorbing until breakage, furnace cooling set at 150 °C followed by tempering at 550 °C would be favorable. Slower cooling implies a greater quantity of conditioned retained austenite, so that, following this, it may be transformed into lower bainite with a high density of finely dispersed precipitated carbides. Furthermore, this tempering also allows the transformation of martensite into ferrite with finely dispersed carbides.
This work studies the influence of the saline atmospheric corrosion on the fatigue strength of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. For this purpose, this alloy was subjected to tests in a salt spray corrosion chamber at different exposure times (1, 2, and 3 months) according to ASTM B117 standard. The morphological study of the pits was carried out by confocal microscopy. Subsequently, fatigue tests were performed at variable stresses whose maximum stress (Smax) was between 30% and 95% of the yield strength (S0) in order to keep them within the zone of elastic behavior of the material. Data were analyzed using the Basquin equation and the maximum likelihood function method. The results show a similar decrease in the conventional fatigue limit (2 × 106 cycles) after one month (98 MPa) and two months (91 MPa) of corrosion. After three months of corrosion, the material showed a very important reduction in the fatigue limit (68 MPa) with respect to the uncorroded material (131 MPa). The data of Se/S0 (fatigue limit/yield strength) versus the ratio Pm/Dm (pit average depth/pit diameter at zero depth) can be fitted to a logarithmic curve.
