The aim of this study were: to evalute the effect of different glass surface (smooth-SS and rough-RS) on wettability of pit and fissure sealants with different compositions; to verify the effect of acid etching of bovine enamel on the wettability of sealants (ES -Etching surface and NS-no etching surface); and to analyze the effect of the sealant composition on the formation of selant/enamel interface. The results showed that the material and surface influenced the wettability and regardless of the sealant, the enamel etching increases wettability and sealant adaption to enamel structure.
Introduction: The high incidence of chronical diseases has increased the population search for alternative and complementary therapies (ACT). They are usually applied when conventional therapies cannot provide the desired outcome. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence of those therapies, especially regarding its use in dentistry. Purpose: review the scientific literature related to alternative/complementary therapies applied in the dental treatment. Methods: We selected scientific papers, through extensive search in Pubmed/MEDLINE and Scielo databases. Key words regarding the subject “Alternative and complementary therapies and its use in dentistry” were applied. The inclusion criteria comprised studies published between January 2010 and July 2020 in Portuguese and English languages. Results: Initially, 373 papers were found, and among them, 37 papers were selected. The literature described mostly acupuncture and musicotherapy. The appliance of these therapies seems to bring benefits, especially for patients anxious due to the dental treatment. Conclusion: More controlled studies are necessary to increase the understanding of ACT. These therapies can be applied by the dental surgeon, mostly with phobic and anxious patients.
Since the effectiveness of occlusal sealing is related to proper seal of the surface, a higher wettability of the sealant would assist in their scattering and avoid the bubble formation, allowing greater adhesion to the enamel structure. So, this study aimed to evaluate the wettability of different resinous sealants front of the smooth and rough glass. The sealants used were: Fluorshield, Helioseal Clear and Defense Chroma Angie. The material wettability was measured by contact angle (sessile drop), using Digidrop goniometer and considering the following groups: 1. Smooth surface; 2. Rough surface of a glass slide. Data were submitted to factorial ANOVA (material x surface) and Tukey's test (p<0.05), using Assistat 7.7 software. There was significant interaction between the materials and surfaces studied (p<0.01). The Helioseal Clear sealant showed the highest wettability on rough glass. Fluorshield and Defense Chroma Angie sealants when applied on smooth glass surface showed lower wettability. Therefore, different sealants exhibit different wettability levels and the type of surface affect this property. The higher wettability was found in the Helioseal Clear sealant when applied onto the rough surface of a glass slide.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
