O efeito chicote (EC) é um fenômeno que está associado a diversos malefícios e impactos negativos para as empresas que compõem as cadeias de suprimentos nas quais ele é identificado, principalmente, no que se refere aos custos logísticos dos estoques. Nesse contexto, tal artigo, buscou quantificar os reflexos do EC nos custos logísticos de matéria-prima em uma cadeia de suprimento de bebidas. Para tal, acompanhando a matéria-prima polietileno, utilizada no processamento das tampas, no período de fev/2006 a set/2007 em um recorte da cadeia de suprimentos do ramo industrial de bebidas não-alcoólica, pode-se verificar primeiramente a ocorrência do EC, e a associação deste na elevação do inventário da empresa, o que ocasiona alteração nos custos produtivos e redução da eficiência. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam que devido à ocorrência de variações amplificadas de compra e consumo do polietileno houve um acréscimo de custos na ordem de R$ 40.000,00 chegando a picos de cerca de R$ 82.000,00 em alguns meses. Estes resultados indicam que o efeito chicote, de fato, influencia negativamente a eficiência das organizações, bem como de toda cadeia de suprimentos, haja vista, propiciar a elevação dos inventários e, com isso, aumentar os custos relacionados aos estoques
