Historicamente, a universidade se configura como um espaço masculino. No Brasil, a primeira mulher a cursar o ensino superior data de 1880, todavia, somente a partir da década de 1970 as mulheres passam a ser maioria nas universidades. O presente artigo traz uma reflexão teórica sobre as contradições da inserção e permanência das mulheres nas universidades, conformando tais espaços como uma espécie de “não lugar”. Parte-se da teoria social crítica e feminista para apreender a história da instituição universidade no Brasil e os desafios encontrados pelas mulheres para ocupar tal espaço. Constata-se que, ainda que as mulheres tenham conseguido ocupar as universidades, a sua participação e busca por legitimidade não são livres de tensões devido à estrutura sexista, às discriminações e às violências provocadas pelas relações desiguais de gênero, étnico-raciais e de classes.
