É conveniente descrever um material composto por vários elementos pelo seu número atômico efetivo, Zeff. No entanto, Zeff não é um número único e deve ser entendido como um parâmetro que depende da energia e que representa os processos de interação de fótons com a matéria. Como tal, o número atômico efetivo pode ser empregado no estudo de materiais radiologicamente equivalentes ao tecido humano e à água. No presente trabalho, cinco amostras radiologicamente equivalentes à água, substância mais abundante no corpo humano, e três amostras radiologicamente equivalentes ao tecido mamário, sendo duas semelhantes ao material que compõe o objeto simulador BR12 e uma semelhante ao material que compõe o objeto simulador CIRS 70/30, tiveram seus números atômicos efetivos determinados pelo método direto e software Auto-Zeff. As amostras foram comparadas dentro do intervalo de energia para radiodiagnóstico (5-150 keV para simuladores de água e 5-35 keV para simuladores de tecido mamário) com os resultados de seus materiais de referência respectivos. Dentre as cinco amostras equivalentes à água, três apresentaram discrepância de 8% para o método direto e cerca de 10% para o Auto-Zeff. Dentre as amostras equivalentes a tecido mamário, a amostra 47 que simula CIRS 70/30 e a amostra 17 que simula BR12 apresentaram os melhores resultados com diferença relativa média menor que 23%. Ambos os métodos apresentaram variações nos resultados de número atômico efetivo na região de interesse, mas essas discrepâncias não afetam a análise comparativa evidenciando a possibilidade do uso de ambos os métodos em análises comparativas de equivalência de materiais equivalentes ao tecido humano e à água.
Um material considerado simulador de tecido humano deve apresentar um comportamento de absorção da radiação, em função da espessura, muito semelhante ao do material de referência. Por sua abundância no corpo humano, a água é muitas vezes utilizada como material de referência. Neste trabalho, foram determinadas propriedades de atenuação de quatro conjuntos de amostras, preparadas a partir de um modelo matemático previamente desenvolvido, utilizando um equipamento de Tomografia Computadorizada de Dupla Energia (DECT, em inglês). Foram obtidos os coeficientes mássicos para os quatro conjuntos de amostras calculados a partir dos números CT médios das imagens e da energia efetiva associada a cada tensão aplicada (80, 100, 120 e 140 kV) ao tubo de raios X. Os coeficientes mássicos do conjunto de amostras calculados são semelhantes, nas energias efetivas estudadas, ao da água e ao previsto pelo modelo matemático, apresentando respectivamente, 1 a 2 % e 4 a 7 % de diferença percentual relativa.
