O aproveitamento de resíduos orgânicos vegetais associados à colonização de fungos na produção de estruturas para serem utilizadas na composição de artefatos tem sido pouco explorado. Embora haja relatos da utilização de técnicas semelhantes na fabricação de peças para a construção civil, arquitetura e artesanato, na Europa e nos Estados Unidos, no Brasil estes estudos são escassos, não havendo relatos. Algumas espécies de fungos, têm a capacidade de degradar a madeira e podem ser utilizadas para aglomerar fragmentos de materiais ricos em celulose. Ao mesmo tempo, a exploração e seleção de espécies nativas para este fim pode contribuir para a prospecção de organismos de interesse industrial. Dessa forma, propôs-se neste trabalho isolar fungos decompositores de madeira e avaliá-los quanto à capacidade de colonização de substratos para a produção de uma estrutura ecológica com finalidade de compor materiais biodegradáveis que poderiam ser utilizados para diversas finalidades. Cogumelos de madeira foram obtidos em restos vegetais, em áreas de restinga e em árvores apodrecidas, no município de Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ. Realizaram-se isolamentos para a obtenção de culturas puras (fonte de inóculo), semeando-as em diversos substratos com composição variável de materiais orgânicos: capim de gramado, bagaço de cana, fibra de mesocarpo do fruto de coco verde e serragem de madeira clara. Os materiais foram secos à sombra, picotados e triturados em liquidificador. Foram adicionados 20% de farelo de trigo e 2% de cal hidratada em solução, para o umedecimento e autoclavagem. Após esterilização do substrato, cada isolado de cogumelo foi semeado e incubado no escuro para avaliação do crescimento micelial. As avaliações foram realizadas verificando-se aqueles fungos que melhor se desenvolveram, considerando velocidade de crescimento, maior cobertura do substrato pelo micélio e compactação natural interna do material orgânico utilizado. O fungo Pycnoporus sanguineus foi identificado como o melhor organismo para se obter o “Ecoproduto” proposto neste trabalho, juntamente com o substrato à base de bagaço de cana e serragem. Nessa interação, o fungo foi capaz de colonizar uniformemente o substrato, tanto interna quanto externamente, além de apresentar uma pigmentação alaranjada típica da espécie, agregando valor estético ao bioproduto. Além disso, as peças produzidas apresentaram-se leves e compactas, sendo uma alternativa aos materiais termoplásticos e espumas sintéticas na fabricação de diversos artefatos.
