Nanophotonic waveguide enhanced Raman spectroscopy (NWERS) is a sensing technique that uses a highly confined waveguide mode to excite and collect the Raman scattered signal from molecules in close vicinity of the waveguide. The most important parameters defining the figure of merit of an NWERS sensor include its ability to collect the Raman signal from an analyte i.e. "the Raman conversion efficiency" and the amount of "Raman background" generated from the guiding material. Here, we compare different photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platforms capable of on-chip Raman sensing in terms of the aforementioned parameters. Among the four photonic platforms under study, tantalum oxide and silicon nitride waveguides exhibit high signal collection efficiency and low Raman background. In contrast, the performance of titania and alumina waveguides suffers from a strong Raman background and a weak signal collection efficiency respectively.
Fiber optics and its application in telecommunications are rarely encountered by students until they reach tertiary education. While some secondary/middle school curricula may include coverage of basic geometrical optics concepts such as reflection and refraction, few if any go further to elaborate on how these eventually relate to global telecommunications. One could say that the science is made accessible for early-stage students, but discussions about applications are often reserved till later stages. In working through a PhD student-led optics educational outreach program called the "Lightwave Roadshow", we have observed, via engagements with young students and the public at school visits and fairs, that many youths (as well as parents) do have a basic appreciation that the internet is somehow based on light signals. However, few know how the two are related, much less how they work. To address this, our team of 'ambassadors' in the Lightwave program has designed a self-contained lesson to introduce youths, aged 11 to 18 years, to fiber optics and optical fiber communications, drawing inspiration from various educational resources such as LASER Classroom™ and the Exploratorium ® . The lesson is modularized into several parts, starting with using light to communicate Morse code, and then going into advanced concepts, such as total internal reflection and multiuser communications based on wavelength-division multiplexing. The latter can be treated as extensions whose inclusion can be tailored based on the youths' educational levels. A feature of this lesson is that it takes a more phenomenological than theoretical approach, and uses materials that are easily obtainable or craftable as well as interesting for youths, including colored gelatin, LED sources, and water as a waveguide. We outline a lesson and pedagogical method which contains hands-on experiments that can be carried out by educators in formal or informal classes, students learning independently, or optics and photonics student chapters and groups doing educational outreach. The experiments within were first demonstrated at the 2016 OSA Frontiers in Optics/Laser Science conference.
We characterize the spectral broadening performance in silica clad and unclad Tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) waveguides as a function of the input pulse central wavelength and polarization, sweeping over a wavelength range from 900 nm to 1500 nm, with an average incident power of 110 mW. The waveguides are 0.7 µm high and between 2.2 and 3.2 µm wide, and the SiO2 top cladding layer is 2 µm thick. We model the dispersion of the higher order spatial modes, and use numerical simulations based on the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation to analyze the nonlinear behaviour of the spatial modes within the waveguides as well as the dispersive effects observed in the experiments. We achieve octave spanning supercontinuum with an average power of 175 mW incident on the waveguide at 1000 nm pump wavelength.
We demonstrate second-order optical nonlinearity (SON) induced in amorphous tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) films by thermal poling. The effects of sodium addition and thermal annealing on the efficiency and stability of second harmonic generation (SHG) have been investigated. Maker fringe analysis has been used to quantify the poling-induced SON. χ(2) of 0.46 ± 0.02 pm/V and 0.34 ± 0.02 pm/V was achieved for sodium-containing and pure Ta2O5 films, respectively. Both the strength and the temporal stability of the induced nonlinearity are discussed with respect to the poling mechanisms and measured electrical conductivity. The lower density of uncombined charges of the Ta2O5 thin films is believed to play a role in the strength of SHG signal, and the rate of SHG decay decreases with thermal annealing.
