Supercontinuum generation in tantalum pentoxide waveguides for pump wavelengths in the 900 nm to 1500 nm spectral region

Abstract: We characterize the spectral broadening performance in silica clad and unclad Tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) waveguides as a function of the input pulse central wavelength and polarization, sweeping over a wavelength range from 900 nm to 1500 nm, with an average incident power of 110 mW. The waveguides are 0.7 µm high and between 2.2 and 3.2 µm wide, and the SiO2 top cladding layer is 2 µm thick. We model the dispersion of the higher order spatial modes, and use numerical simulations based on the generalized nonli… Show more

“…Second, the effectiveness of the nonlinear processes is increased by waveguide dispersion engineering, allowing a careful control over the dispersion curves and obtaining a desired result suitable for a given application. This has been demonstrated over the last years for several different PIC platforms [20][21][22][26][27][28][29][30][31][32] . All these properties, in conjunction with demonstrated techniques for achieving low input coupling losses [33][34][35] , add to the great appeal of the LNOI PIC platform.…”

“…A wide SC spanning 1.5 octaves could be generated in a Ta 2 O 5 waveguide, air-cladded as to reach the desirable anomalous dispersion around 1 μm [ 155 ], with relatively low input pump power, showing the potential of the platform. In [ 156 ], the authors performed a detailed study of the behavior of the spectral broadening in both air-clad and silica clad Ta 2 O 5 waveguides with large cross sections. They studied the influence of the pump wavelength and polarization state.…”

“…This would eliminate or reduce the need for an external flattener on-a-chip. Very broad spectra have been demonstrated in, for example, SiN [440], magnesium oxide doped lithium niobate thin films on silicon [428,433], tantala [431,441], and aluminum nitride structures [434].…”
