Interferon alpha-2b inhibits the growth and DNA synthesis of endometrioma cells in culture. This finding may have prospects for the treatment of endometriosis.
The object was to study the concentration of nitric acid in chocolate cyst fluid. Chocolate cyst fluid was obtained by aspiration from endometriomas during laparoscopy and/or laparotomy in 12 patients with endometriomas. Chocolate cyst fluid was cleared of blood contamination and then used for the quantitative assay of nitric oxide. The concentration of nitric oxide in chocolate cyst fluid was observe to vary between 20.5 and 40.9 mM/l. It was concluded that the role of nitric oxide in the pathogenesis of endometrioma needs further evaluation. It may be a factor in increasing vascularity, bleeding, and some apoptotic changes in endometriotic tissue. (J GYNECOL SURG 17:115, 2001)
