Este artículo propone el análisis del juicio de residencia del virrey del Perú Francisco de Borja y Aragón, príncipe de Esquilache, a partir de una perspectiva contextualizada, contrastada e inclusiva de los actores y partes del proceso; esto es, un tipo de acercamiento más amplio y que responde, sin duda, a los estímulos generados por los trabajos que desde hace unos años vienen renovando el estudio de la corrupción. En dicha línea, este artículo tiene como objetivo profundizar especialmente en el papel del juez residenciador, el licenciado Antonio Fernández de Montiel, para reflexionar sobre el alcance de la corrupción incluso en los dispositivos diseñados para combatirla.
