Fear of falling is the most common reported fear among older adults. Nevertheless, little is known about whom among this population develops fear of falling and why. This study aims to identify physical and psychosocial correlates of fear of falling among older adults in assisted living facilities. Data were collected from interviews with 208 residents using measures of fear of falling, physical and social functioning, depression, and state and trait anxiety. Results revealed that 48.6% of the participants had moderate to severe concern about falling. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis revealed that use of a walking device, depression, balance impairment, trait anxiety, female gender, and a previous history of a fall or falls were independent factors associated with fear of falling. It is suggested that improving physical fitness and balance control and increasing one's self-efficacy and sense of control over the environment can decrease these sources of fear among older adults.

The findings have direct implications for mental health nursing interventions, signaling the critical need to engage both parents in family-based interventions to address youth suicidal behavior.

Background: Aging represents a time of significant challenges as well as opportunities for growth. Resilience helps older adults adjust to ongoing demands of aging. Little is known, however, about individual factors that bolster resilience. This study examines the potential contribution of psychological wellbeing in building resilience in older adults.Methods: A sample of 150 community-dwelling older adults was recruited from elder clubs in Alexandria, Egypt. Participant interviews included measures of resilience, psychological wellbeing, as well as measures of physical and psycho-social functioning.Results: Psychological wellbeing and resilience were positively and strongly correlated (r = .70, p < .001). Resilience was significantly associated with five dimensions of psychological wellbeing: mastery of environment (r = .54, p < .001), self-acceptance (r = .53, p < .001), personal growth, and purpose in life (both r = .49, p < .001), and autonomy (r = .36, p < .001). A weak, but significant association was found with the sixth dimension, positive relationship with others (r = .29, p < .001). Adjusting for potential confounding variables, psychological wellbeing remained significantly associated with resilience (β = .59, p < .001). Mastery of environment (β = .23, p < .01), autonomy (β = .20, p < .01), personal growth (β = .19, p < .01), and purpose in life (β = .18, p < .01), were independently influenced resilience among older adults.Conclusions: The findings highlight the adaptive function of psychological wellbeing in boosting resilience among older adults. Nursing strategies to optimize resilience and psychological wellbeing among older adults are delineated.

Background: Nursing education is associated with high intensity work and potential burnout. Sense of coherence mitigates the effect of job stress and enhances work wellness. This study aims to identify work-related patterns of behavior and experience among nurse educators and examine the independent relationship between sense of coherence and workplace behavior patterns.Methods: The study used a cross-sectional descriptive design and a sample of 130 nurse educators teaching in the Faculty of Nursing, Alexandria University, Egypt. The nurse educators completed questionnaires measuring sense of coherence and work-related patterns of behavior and experience.Results: Discriminant analysis delineated four work behavior patterns: healthy (16.2%), frugal (1.5%), overburdened (68.5%), and burnout (13.8%). Sense of coherence was positively associated with the healthy work pattern (r = .66, p < .001), and negatively associated with the burnout (r = -.63, p < .001) and overburdened (r = -.18, p < .05) patterns. Regression analyses, controlling for years of teaching experience, indicated that a weak sense of coherence was associated with classification of nurse educators into the overburdened work pattern (B = -.05, SE = .12, Wald χ2 = 13.13, p < .001) and the burnout work pattern (B = -.10, SE = .02, Wald χ2 = 21.52, p < .001) compared to healthy work pattern.}Conclusions: The study findings highlight the importance of sense of coherence as a health-promoting resource in the workplace. Strategies are discussed for creating meaningful work experiences to reinforce a sense of coherence and simultaneously cultivate work-related wellness among nurse educators.
