Spanish validation of the psychological needs thwarting scale in exerciseABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to validate the Spanish version of the Psychological Needs Thwarting Scale (PNTS). A sample of 509 university students took part in this research and psychometric properties of PNTS were analyzed through different analysis. The results supported both a first-order three-factor model (i.e., thwarting of autonomy, relatedness and competence) and a higher-order model (i.e. three subscales conforming a construct named psychological need thwarting). The structure of both models was invariant across gender. Alpha values equal to o higher than .70 and suitable levels of temporal stability were obtained. Furthermore, students reporting higher levels of socialphysique anxiety had higher scores in all subscales than the group reporting lower levels of social-physique anxiety. The findings of this study provided reliability and validity for the PNTS in a Spanish context.
Abstract:The purpose of this study was to identify the different motivational profiles and the existence of differences in perceived competence and physical condition among a sample of 736 students. Different instruments were applied in order to assess sport motivation (SMS), motivational orientation (POSQ), perceived competence and physical condition. Cluster analysis showed four motivational profiles (highly motivated; non-self-determined; moderated self-determined; amotivated). Perceived competence and physical condition manifested significant differences in the four clusters. There were gender and after school sport practice differences in the four clusters too. These results enable physical education teachers to implement segmentation strategies in order to increase the effectiveness of their interventions and achieve more active participation.
Positive body image refers to individuals' ability to conceptualize their bodies with love, respect, and appreciation. The study of positive body image is relatively new, and instruments used to investigate this multi-faceted construct have received limited use in non-English speaking countries. Thus, the aim of this investigation is to consider four measures that are associated with positive body image across eight different countries. Participants (n = 6272) completed the Body Appreciation Scale-2, the Body Areas Satisfaction Scale, the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale, and the Weight Bias Internalization Scale. Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses (MG-CFAs) and item-response theory (IRT) models were used to examine the measurement invariance of these surveys. Our results generally suggest that positive body image, weight bias, and appearance comparison can be
