Doing writing research from an applied linguistics perspective means investigating individual, collaborative, and organizational writing and text production as language-based activities in complex and dynamic real-life contexts. In doing so, micro and macro levels, product and process perspectives, as well as theoretical and practical questions are combined in transdisciplinary approaches. Appropriate methods have to be deliberately chosen and transparently explained across disciplinary boundaries. Methodological questions need to be clarified, such as: which method fits which problem -and how should and can various methods complement each other?In this chapter, we start from two methodologically complementary ways of doing research into real-life writing processes (Part 1). These approaches illustrate why collecting data represents a key problem in the history of writing research (2). We then outline a typology of state-of-the-art methods in writing research (3) and explain challenges of combining perspectives and methods in research projects (4). This allows us to evaluate what sophisticated methodology in writing research can contribute to applied linguistics (5) and to conclude by sketching a related research roadmap (6). In the reference section, we focus on work combining approaches from writing research and applied linguistics in methodologically innovative ways (7).

S e nos ativermos ao termo "crítica genética", constatamos que foi atestado pela primeira vez em 1979, quando constou do título de uma coletânea publicada por Louis Hay, os Essais de Critique Génétique. É, pois, de uma história muito recente que tentarei aqui delinear alguns pontos de referência -não, aliás, para negar brutalmente todos os estudos de inspiração genética que existiram, de fato, anteriormente, tanto na França quanto na Itália, na Alemanha etc., mas antes para afirmar que a "crítica genética" não é exatamente a mesma coisa que a "crítica de gênese"; com relação a esta, J. Molino lembra em um artigo recente (Molino 1988, p.9) que o termo é devido a Gustave Rudler e que a coisa é a herdeira de toda uma longa e excelente tradição filológica (1). Se a "crítica genética" reivindica também uma certa especificidade, como se define? O que é a crítica genética? Ou ainda: o que se faz quando se faz crítica genética?Eis algumas definições tomadas ao acaso de minhas leituras: "Analisar o documento autógrafo para compreender, no próprio movimento da escritura, os mecanismos da produção, elucidar os caminhos seguidos pelo escritor e o processo que presidiu ao nascimento da obra, elaborar os conceitos, métodos e técnicas que permitam explorar cientificamente o precioso patrimônio que os manuscritos conservados nas coleções e arquivos representam (...) Wie kann die textgenetische Untersuchung eines Bühnenwerks aussehen, wo sich dieses gerade durch die ihm eigene Beweglichkeit und notwendige Unabgeschlossenheit auszeichnet ? Wie lässt sich die Genese eines Theaterstucks analysieren, das doch nur im Augenblick seiner Auffiihrung Realität besitzt ? Wie lassen sich die Zeugnisse der Entstehung bestimmen, wenn man weiß, dass sie notwendigerweise instabil, heterogen und flüchtig sind ? Erster, unabdingbarer Schritt : alien an der Inszenierung Beteiligten und auch den Archiven nahelegen, die fragilen Spuren der Entstehung einer Theaterauffiihrung aufzubewahren (Notizbücher, Regiehefte, Probenaufnahmen, Skizzen zum Bühnenbild, etc.). Die vorliegende Studie mochte einen Rahmen aufzeigen, in dem sich die komplexen, ständig sich verändernden Beziehungen zwischen dem Entstehen des Textes und der Genese der Inszenierung auswerten lassen.

This paper sets out the linguistically relevant features of a particular kind of writing, the outline, or ébauche as Zola calls it, which is not yet a text but which is supposed to prepare for it: this function implies many self-injunctions, evaluations, interrogations. The example that is being analysed, the outline of Zola's Bête humaine, suggests several explanatory hypotheses: an "externalised inner speech", an interlocution between a writing-I and a reading-I, and a speech act through which the "I" generates a program for a world about to be created through writing. The so-called "performative" hypothesis subsumes these three approaches. According to it, the outline is a performative act, giving a tangible form to an inner discourse, involving two agencies (the writer and the reader) mirroring the splitting of the subject. At the end of the paper, this analysis of the outline is extended to cover every kind of avant-texte.
