Concepts from the logic of modalities are applied to the life cycle to elaborate a new theory of adult and late-life development. Logical modalities involve what kind of truth a proposition or experience possesses. Four logical modalities are described, each governing discrete periods of life, both cognitively and emotionally. It is hypothesized that optimal development in adult life includes explicit awareness of these modalities and that such awareness is a feature of ‘wisdom’ in later life.
The usual approximations to the molecular orbitals of H2+ are shown to have an improper exponential dependence on the radial elliptic coordinate λ. However, the exact λ dependence is easily incorporated into simple trial functions and leads to substantially improved numerical accuracy for both the 1sσg and 2pσu states.
Psychological developments in later life potentially affect psychotherapy with older adults. The present study measured the effect of "selfcontexting"-a development hypothesized to occur in mid-life-on brief dynamic therapy. Subjects included 15 adults from 50 to 81 years of age and 10 younger adults from 20 to 40 years. Results confirmed the hypothesis that more successful outcome correlates with increased selfcontexting among the older but not younger adults. The study underscores the importance of investigating further applications of life-cycle psychology to psychotherapy.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
