Context:The relationship between dairy products consumption and the incidence of diabetes is investigated in various studies leading to contradictory results; therefore, the current meta-analytical study aimed at shedding light on the matter and estimating the potentiality of diabetes resulting from consuming dairy products.Evidence Acquisition: The study used some reliable electronic databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and PubMed revised to March 2016. All original articles from prospective cohort and case-cohort studies examining the relationship between dairy products consumption and the risk of diabetes were considered without any restrictions on age, gender, language, race, and publication year. To assess the quality of the study, the STROBE (strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology) checklist was employed. The indices of relative risk and rate ratio were reported using the random effect model. Results:Out of 1391 articles, 14 studies (covering 458,082 subjects) were included in the current meta-analysis. The findings showed that consuming dairy products prevents diabetes: total dairy decreases the risk of diabetes by 8% to 12% (relative risk = 0.88 (95%CI: 0.80, 0.96), rate ratio = 0.92 (95%CI: 0.88, 0.97)). The decrease adds up from 11% to 19% in the case of consuming low-fat dairy (relative risk = 0.81 (95%CI: 0.68, 0.96); rate ratio = 0.89 (95%CI: 0.85, 0.93)). In spite of the fact that high-fat dairy diminishes the risk of diabetes, the relationship is not statistically significant (relative risk = 0.98 (95%CI: 0.78, 1.24); rate ratio = 1.01 (95%CI: 0.96, 1.06)). Conclusions:The current study indicated that the consumption of total dairy and low-fat dairy had a preventive impact on the incidence of diabetes; therefore, it seems that drawing up some plans in this regard decreases the risk of the disease.
Background: There is no global consensus about the relationship between dairy consumption and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This study aimed at integrating the results of several studies to predict the dairy effects on CVD, e.g. stroke and CHD. Methods: In the present study, some major databases such as Scopus, Science Direct, and PubMed were searched up to September 2014. All prospective cohort studies dealing with dairy products consumption and CVD were surveyed regardless of their publication date or language. This reference population includes all individuals without any delimitation with regard to age, gender, or race. The quality of the study was evaluated using STROBE Checklist. Study selection and data extraction were done by 2 independent researchers separately. The indices in this study were RR and HR. The random model was used to combine the results. Results: Out of 6234 articles, 11 were included in the meta-analysis. No relationship was found between stroke and consumption of milk, cream, and butter, and the results are as follow: RR = 0.91 (95%CI: 0.81-1.01) for milk, RR = 0.97 (95%CI: 0.88-1.06) for cream, and RR = 0.95 (95%CI: 0.85-1.07) for butter. However, cheese was found to decrease stroke risk: RR = 0.93 (95%CI: 0.88-0.99). The relationship of CHD with consumption of milk, cheese, cream, and butter are as follows, respectively: RR = 1.05 (95% CI: 0.96- 1.15), RR = 0.90 (95%CI: 0.81-1.01), RR = 0.96 (95% CI: 0.87-1.06), and RR = 0.99 (95%CI: 0.89-1.11). In other words, no relationship existed between dairy products and CHD. Conclusion: No relationship was found between consumption of various dairy products and CHD or stroke, except for cheese that decreased stroke risk by 7%. Considering the small number of studies, the result of the present study is not generalizable and more studies need to be conducted
Periodontitis and oral cancers are the most common oral diseases in the human population. The early diagnosis of oral diseases allows the efficient therapy of the patient. During oral diseases, resident cells in the affected tissue secrete exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) into saliva. As these miRNAs have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of oral diseases, they have been suggested as non‐invasive and validated biomarkers in predicting periodontitis severity and cancer progression. Several attempts have been performed to evaluate the expression of salivary exosomal miRNAs in patients with periodontitis and oral cancers. Some miRNAs are differentially expressed in the saliva of the affected patients when compared to healthy individuals. These miRNAs are reviewed in this narrative review. Collectively, it seems that salivary exosomal microRNAs could be used as a diagnostic biomarker in oral diseases. However, further studies are required to validate them.
