Se trata de définir el uso particular que hace el Premio Nobel guatemalteco de la memoria como instrumento de conocimiento. Muy distante de la vision proustiana, la de Asturias aparece como la apropiación por un sujeto de acontecimientos y mitos anteriores a su propia existencia, trátese de la "memoria colectiva" de un pueblo (como es el caso en Leyendas de Guatemala, por ejemplo, con el paseo del narrador contemporâneo por el pasado de la ciudad) o de las reminiscencias anteriores a la conciencia (cómo es el caso en El Arbol de la Cruz con el viaje intra-uterino de Anti, el Guerrero). En ambos casos el proceso de reactivación de la "memoria anterior" se expresa en términos espaciales que permiten al protagonista recorrer el pasado sin solución de continuidad. Esta operación se suele denominar, en los escritos de Asturias, "el desandar" y constituye la clave de la comprensión del mundo.
