Palavras-chave: aprendizagem motora; malabarismo; habilidades motoras.ABSTRACT Introduction: Circus activities can belong in Physical Education classes thanks to the large variety of games that can be played, such as aerial, acrobatic, dramatic activities and juggling. Juggling is the main focus of this study, due to its educational role inasmuch as it involves several basic motor abilities and skills. Objective: Checking whether students submitted to a jugglingdriven circus activity programme have improved their motor skills. Material and Methods: The research was carried out with 9 and 10-year-old students who were applied a pre-test aiming at basic motor skills (jumping, throwing, catching and handling objects). Ten 45-minute-long sessions took place which included throwing-juggling classes and object handling activities. At last, a posttest was applied. Results: Three out of four tests -catching a ball thrown with both hands (t = 4.50); throwing a ball towards a target with the dominant hand (t = 9.43) and splitting up cards with the dominant hand (t = 6.40) -were found to provide statistically significant outcomes as compared with pre-and post-test means, according to the pairwise t-test. Conclusions: Meaningful differences highlight the need to break up with traditional teaching methods in Physical Education classes, thereby pushing students instead towards circus activities.
Licenciatura. Formação de professores.
