CARTOGRAPHIC KNOWLEDGE IN TEACHING PRACTICE: A STUDY WITH GEOGRAPHY TEACHERS AbstractThis essay aims to reflect about the importance of cartographic knowledge in Geography teaching practice in basic education, based on an empirical study with teachers from public schools in Chapecó, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Based on quali-quantitative information obtained in inquiry forms and interviews, it analyzes the conceptions of the teachers about the functionality and use of cartographic knowledge in their classes. It was observed that the potential use of Cartography in the teaching-learning are still little explored for a significant portion of teachers, due to, among other factors, the limited vision of it -seen only as a technique or as a specific subject of discipline -and the lack of understanding of the theoretical and methodological principles of this knowledge. These limitations, which originate largely in the formation of teachers, hampering the use of teaching practices that promote the use of cartographic language to building concepts and to analyze of space within the school Geography.
This paper presents reflections about the teaching of school geography, focusing on the learning of cartographic knowledge. The main goal was to verify the understanding of cartographic views of fifth-year elementary school students, through the cartographic language present in representations of selected students. The analysis was based on Kozel (2001) to examine mental maps concerning to its graphic representations, such as the form of representation, distribution and specificity of the elements and, finally, the proportion observed between the real and represented elements. By observing these elements in the representations, it is observed the importance of working, in the initial years, with activities that develop the cartographic knowledge within the teaching-learning process of Geography.
