Las investigaciones neotectónicas se enfocan a la determinación de los movimientos tectónicos más recientes de la corteza terrestre y poseen un gran significado en el análisis geomorfológico de la estructura del relieve moderno. En las regiones relativamente llanas no siempre resulta fácil el reconocimiento de evidencias de las deformaciones neotectónicas en el relieve fluvial. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, quedó demostrada la eficiencia del empleo de los métodos geológicos, geomorfológicos y edafológicos, como la evaluación morfométrica del relieve, el análisis de anomalías del drenaje, el estudio de la distribución espacial de los complejos estratigráficos y de los sedimentos aluviales, y la espectrometría del canal de potasio en los mismos. Sus resultados destacaron la existencia de bloques longitudinales de tipo horst y graben, corroborando los resultados geofísicos y de perforaciones, así como la identificación de tres bloques transversales escalonados, de oeste a este, con amplitudes diferenciadas de los desplazamientos verticales del orden de 6 y 10 m. Los bloques centro-orientales (II y III) han experimentado una basculación tectónica sostenida, forzando la migración de la red fluvial en dirección suroeste, como lo evidencia la asimetría de las cuencas hidrográficas y la migración de los ríos en esa dirección. Finalmente, se pudo establecer que los ríos en la parte axial de la llanura muestran un patrón regional de inflexión horaria de sus cauces, el cual probablemente esté asociado con movimientos neotectónicos de cizalladura, que se manifiestan a lo largo de la dislocación que constituye el límite meridional de la depresión Los Palacios.
El análisis de las políticas públicas del sector forestal con miras al ordenamiento general del territorio mexicano, conjuntamente con entrevistas a funcionarios y especialistas de dicho sector y la participación técnica de expertos regionales, permitieron identificar los atributos ambientales más relevantes para la aptitud sectorial forestal, tales como la existencia de regiones forestales y de áreas actualmente degradadas, la degradación de los suelos y las áreas más marginadas, dado el significado de la tenencia de tierras forestales por las comunidades indígenas. Para ello, se aplicó una evaluación multicriterio y la ponderación de los valores de cada variable, con base en un proceso de análisis jerárquico, que arrojó diez categorías de aptitud sectorial forestal por unidad ambiental biofísica. La representación cartográfica reflejó las categorías favorables de aptitud forestal, en mayor o mediano grado, según su superficie, en cada una de las 145 unidades utilizadas en esta investigación. El panorama nacional refleja la necesidad de una política ambiental integrada, que se corresponda con las realidades de la aptitud sectorial forestal y de la ocupación territorial por otros sectores, en ocasiones con actividades antagónicas, para dictar políticas públicas sectoriales que impulsen esfuerzos en la protección y en el fomento del patrimonio forestal nacional.
La vulnerabilidad constituye aquella variable en que los tomadores de decisiones pueden influir, especialmente cuando se analiza un espacio geográfico ya construido en condiciones de peligro símico evidente. Este caso de estudio se enfoca en el análisis de la vulnerabilidad estructural del fondo habitacional de la Ciudad de Toluca, empleando una metodología cualitativa. Se consideraron tres indicadores: tipologías constructivas, edad de las construcciones y el periodo constructivo en función de la aplicación del Reglamento General de Construcciones del Municipio de Toluca. Los resultados obtenidos permitieron identificar cuatro niveles de vulnerabilidad estructural, sobresalen 866 manzanas con vulnerabilidad muy alta y 1430 con alta vulnerabilidad, donde aproximadamente residen 218 314 personas. La cartografía generada puede ser considerada un insumo en los planes de reducción de la vulnerabilidad estructural para manejar el riesgo de desastres. Así mismo, quedaron enunciadas algunas líneas de investigaciones para futuros trabajos, especialmente en la definición de funciones de vulnerabilidad para las edificaciones típicas de la ciudad y el análisis del efecto de sitio a partir de las condiciones geotécnicas dentro del escenario urbano.
