Objetivos: Avaliar a eficácia da antibioticoterapia utilizada para o tratamento de infecções respiratórias em crianças atendidas em uma instituição de saúde do estado de Minas Gerais. Materiais e Métodos: Foi realizada análise de duzentos e oito prontuários de clientes pediátricos atendidos no setor de pediatria em uma instituição de saúde em um município do sul de Minas Gerais, sendo selecionados apenas aqueles com diagnóstico de infecção respiratória, para avaliar a indicação clínica do uso do fármaco, o(s) medicamento(s) utilizado(s) e a frequência e duração do tratamento. Resultados: Foram selecionados trinta e quatro (16,3%) prontuários com diagnóstico por alguma afecção respiratória, sendo a faixa etária de maior incidência de seis a doze meses, com dez (29%) casos, as afecções mais frequentes foram broncoespasmo e pneumonia, dezesseis (46%) casos. O antimicrobiano mais utilizado em âmbito nasocomial foi a ampicilina em dezenove crianças (56%), e a amoxicilina isolada ou em associação, somou quatorze indicações (41%) na conduta da alta hospitalar. Conclusão: É necessário desenvolver métodos eficazes para diagnosticar as infecções respiratórias que acometem as crianças cada vez mais novas e conscientizar todos os profissionais da área de saúde quanto ao uso abusivo e negligente dos antibióticos, evitando assim o aparecimento de microrganismos com cepas multirresistentes aos fármacos utilizados atualmente.
