The present study aims to test Bowlby's suggestions concerning relations between the child's attachment quality with parents and subsequently constructed models of self-worth during early childhood. In most research on this question, attachment with mothers is considered in relation to self-worth but the child's attachment with fathers is not. Neither has the peer group been studied as an influence on child self-esteem, in the context of attachment research. This study addresses these relatively unstudied influences on child self-esteem. Attachment security to mother and father was measured by the Attachment Behavior Q-Set at two and half years of age. At five years of age social acceptance was measured using two sociometric techniques, and the self-esteem with the California Child Q-Sort. Our analyses indicated that security of the attachment to father and peer acceptance are both unique, significant predictors of the childrens' self-esteem. The security of the attachment to mother was also related to child self-esteem but did not emerge as a uniquely significant predictor. Peer acceptance appeared to moderate of the effect of the security of the attachment to father on the self-esteem of children. Our results extend the relatively sparse literature relating early attachments to self-esteem during early childhood.

This study tested the hypothesis that social engagement (SE) with peers is a fundamental aspect of social competence during early childhood. Relations between SE and a set of previously validated social competence indicators, as well as additional variables derived from observation and sociometric interviews were assessed using both variable-centered and person-centered approaches (N = 1453, 696 girls) in 4 samples (3 U.S.A., 1 Portuguese). Directly observed SE was positively associated with broad-band measures of socially competent behavior, peer acceptance, being a target of peers' attention, and also with broad-band personality dimensions. Using individual Q-items significantly associated with SE in 3 of our 4 samples, a hierarchical cluster analysis yielded a 5-cluster solution that grouped cases efficiently. Tests on relations between cluster membership and the set of social competence and other variables revealed significant main effects of cluster membership in the full sample and within each individual sample, separately. With the exception of tests for peer negative preference, children in the lowest SE cluster also had significantly lower overall social competence, personality functioning scores than did children in higher SE clusters. Durante o período pré-escolar as relações que a criança estabelece com os principais cuidadores e com os pares são de importância fundamental para o seu desenvolvimento socio emocional. Contudo, são poucos os estudos acerca da relação entre a qualidade da vinculação e a forma como as crianças brincam com os pares. Pretende-se com este estudo investigar a associação entre as representações de vinculação de crianças pré-escolares e diferentes dimensões do jogo interativo das mesmas. Participaram 66 crianças, entre os 4 e os 5 anos de idade, e respetivas educadoras, de duas escolas distintas. A qualidade das representações de vinculação foi acedida através do Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT), cujas histórias foram codificadas por três investigadores "cegos". Os comportamentos de jogo interativo em contexto pré-escolar foram reportados pelas educadoras através da Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale (PIPPS). Detetou-se uma associação positiva estatisticamente significativa entre a Segurança das representações de vinculação e a Interação Positiva com os Pares e associações significativas negativas entre a Segurança e a Disrupção e a Segurança e a Desconexão. Os nossos resultados evidenciam a associação entre relações seguras de vinculação e o modo como as crianças interagem ludicamente com os pares.
