L’objectif de cette recherche est d’analyser le lien entre les facteurs scolaires (moyenne générale déclarée par les jeunes et redoublement), l’estime de soi (scolaire et globale), les stratégies de protection de soi et la participation parentale perçue par les adolescents. Considérant la multidimensionnalité du soi, nous supposons dans un premier temps que les facteurs scolaires vont influencer l’estime de soi scolaire des jeunes. Nous référant à la théorie de la valorisation de soi (Leary, 2007), nous présumons ensuite que les jeunes vont agir pour préserver ou rehausser leur estime de soi. Nous examinons, dans ce sens, deux stratégies de protection de soi : le désengagement à l’égard du domaine scolaire et l’auto-handicap. Nous supposons que la participation parentale perçue par les jeunes va modérer l’utilisation de ce type de stratégies. Nous nous centrons sur la communication entre les parents et leur adolescent ainsi que sur l’implication des parents dans les loisirs de leur enfant, à partir d’une validation française de l’outil de Deslandes (1995). Nos résultats sont fondés sur une enquête menée auprès de 870 jeunes âgés de 14 à 17 ans. Ils soulignent l’importance que les parents peuvent apporter principalement par la communication qu’ils entretiennent avec leur enfant dans l’adoption par celui-ci de stratégies adaptées aux attentes scolaires. Cette recherche montre ainsi l’intérêt d’un partenariat école-famille.
