This study was designed to evaluate in vitro the efficacy of a novel at-home bleaching technique using 10% or 16% carbamide peroxide modified by casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and its influence on the microhardness of bleached enamel. A total of 40 bovine incisors were divided into four groups (n=10) according to the bleaching agent used: 10% carbamide peroxide only; a blend of 10% carbamide peroxide and a CPP-ACP paste; 16% carbamide peroxide only; and a blend of 16% carbamide peroxide and a CPP-ACP paste. During the 14-day bleaching regimen, the samples were stored in artificial saliva. The Vickers microhardness and color of the teeth were assessed at baseline (T0) and immediately after the bleaching regimen (T14) using a microhardness tester and a spectrophotometer, respectively. The degree of color change was determined by the Commission Internationale de l'Eclariage (CIE) L*a*b* system (ΔE, ΔL*, Δa*, and Δb*) and Vita shade guide parameters. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance and the Tukey test (p<0.05). The teeth that were bleached with a blend of peroxide (10% or 16%) and the CPP-ACP paste presented increased microhardness values at T14 compared with T0, whereas the samples that were bleached with peroxide only did not show any differences in their microhardness values. All of the bleaching agents were effective at whitening the teeth and did not show a statistically significant difference using the CIEL*a*b* system (ΔE, ΔL*, Δa*, and Δb*) or the Vita shade guide parameters. The use of a CPP-ACP paste with carbamide peroxide bleaching agents increased the bleached enamel's microhardness and did not have an influence on whitening efficacy.

The use of a CPP-ACP paste mixed to carbamide/hydrogen peroxides can decrease adverse side-effects from tooth bleaching on an enamel surface.

This study tested the effects of long-term storage and aluminum oxide air abrasion on the bond strength of self-etching adhesive systems. Extracted human third molars were ground flat with 600-grit SiC paper to expose middle coronal dentin. Clearfil SE Bond and One-Up Bond F were applied to dentin surfaces in accordance with manufacturers instructions with or without previous aluminum oxide 50 µm air abrasion. A crown was built up with the resin composite TPH Spectrum and the specimens were stored in water for 24 hours. The bonded assemblies were vertically sectioned into beams for microtensile bond testing. The beams of each tooth were individually immersed in bottles containing water at 37°C for one day, three and six months; the water was changed daily. The specimens were then subjected to microtensile bond testing. The bond strength data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey Kramer test. Fractured specimens were analyzed in a scanning electron microscope to determine failure modes. Air abrasion improved Clearfil SE Bond bond strength in the three month evaluation. No significant difference was found between the two adhesives systems, but bond strengths gradually decreased over time. Failure modes varied significantly among groups and were influenced by long-term storage and aluminum oxide air abrasion.

The use of CPP-ACP was able to prevent negative changes in roughness and hardness of bovine enamel when associated to hydrogen peroxide, and might be applied before/after the bleaching protocol.

ABSTRACT:The suitability of bovine and swine teeth has been evaluated when they are used as substitutes for extracted human teeth in varied researches. This study evaluated in vitro the marginal microleakage in human, bovine and swine enamel. Cubic cavities (2 x 2 x 2 mm 3 ) were prepared in enamel blocks from human, swine and bovine teeth. The cavities were filled with composite resin and conventional glass-ionomer cement. All the samples were thermocycled for 1,000 cycles (5 ± 2°C -55 ± 2°C) and immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 12 hours. The microleakage was quantified by a spectrophotometric technique. The results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test. The glass-ionomer cement presented significantly higher leakage means (µg/ml ± SD) than the composite resin for all substrates (0.0695 ± 0.01313 vs. 0.0471 ± 0.0163, p < 0.01). No significant differences were found between bovine and swine enamel (0.0668 ± 0.0246 vs. 0.0674 ± 0.0286); however, both presented statistically higher leakage means than human enamel (0.0407 ± 0.0195, p < 0.01). It was concluded that the microleakage pattern was affected by substrates, and that bovine and swine substrates allow higher marginal leakage than human substrates. The results indicate there should be precaution in the substitution of human substrate in laboratory studies of microleakage. DESCRIPTORS: Dental enamel; Glass ionomer cements; Composite resins. RESUMO:A adequação de dentes bovinos e suínos na substituição de dentes humanos extraídos tem sido avaliada em vários estudos. O objetivo deste estudo in vitro foi analisar o padrão de infiltração marginal em esmaltes humano, bovino e suíno. Cavidades cúbicas (2 x 2 x 2 mm 3 ) foram realizadas em blocos de esmalte obtidos de dentes molares humanos, incisivos bovinos e molares suínos. As cavidades foram restauradas com compósito resinoso fotopolimerizável e cimento de ionômero de vidro. Os espécimes foram submetidos à termociclagem por 1.000 ciclos entre 5 ± 2°C e 55 ± 2°C e imersos em azul de metileno a 2%, por 12 horas. A concentração de corante infiltrado foi medida, quantitativamente, através de espectrofotometria. Os dados foram transformados em µg/ml e submetidos à análise estatística ANOVA, seguida pelo teste de Tukey. As médias de infiltração marginal (µg/ml ± DP) nos esmaltes bovino e suíno não foram significativamente diferentes (0,0668 ± 0,0246 vs. 0,0674 ± 0,0286), mas foram superiores e estatisticamente diferentes (p < 0,01) das encontradas no esmalte humano (0,0407 ± 0,0195, p < 0,01), e as médias de infiltração marginal foram superiores nas restaurações realizadas com o cimento de iônomero de vidro (0,0695 ± 0,01313 vs. 0,0471 ± 0,0163, p < 0,01). Os resultados permitiram concluir que os substratos bovino e suíno permitem uma maior infiltração marginal que o esmalte humano, indicando que a capacidade de selamento marginal pode ser afetada por diferenças entre esses substratos. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diametrical tensile strength (DTS) of three light-curing photo-activated composites with two different light curing units (LCU). Three types of dental restorative composites were used in this study: micro filled A110 (3M Espe); P60 (3M Espe) for posterior restorations, and micro-hybrid Charisma (Heraeus-Kulzer). The two LCUs were: halogen light (HAL) (Degulux, Degussa) and blue light emitting diode (LED) (Ultrablue, DMC). Resin composite specimens were inserted incrementally into a Teflon split mold measuring 3 mm in depth and 6 mm in internal diameter, and cured using either LCU (n = 10). Specimens were placed into a dark bottle containing distilled water at 37 degrees C for 7 days. DTS tests were performed in a Universal Testing Machine (0.5 mm/min). Data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results were (MPa): A110/HAL: 276.50 +/- 62.94a; A110/LED: 306.01 +/- 65.16a; P60/HAL: 568.29 +/- 60.77b and P60/LED: 543.01 +/- 83.65b; Charisma/HAL: 430.94 +/- 67.28c; Charisma/LED: 435.52 +/- 105.12c. Results suggested that no significant difference in DTS was obtained with LCUs for the same composite. However, resin composite restorative materials presented different DTS.
