The use of geographic information system to identify the susceptibility capacity to mass movements in the Caratinga River casin, Minas Gerais Abstract This study aimed to map the susceptibility to mass movements in the Caratinga river basin. The adopted methodology was based on a multicriteria analysis, in GIS environment, of five conditioning factors for the occurrence of mass movements, being them: land slope, use and occupation of the land, soil type, precipitation intensity and surface runoff. All geoprocessing procedures were performed in QGIS 2.41.9. The slope was obtained through INPE slope models. The images used to classify the land covering were from the Landsat-8 OLI satellite and classified in the QGIS. Precipitation was determined through interpolation, using the IDW method. The methodology for surface flow modeling was that of the Curve Number. Susceptibility maps were generated separately for each criteria and, subsequently, the hierarchical analytical process was applied to determine the final result. From the analyzed total, about 33.1% showed high or very high susceptibility, with more than 50% having moderate risk. The study demonstrated the functionality of the used methodology for the risk areas mapping. We highlight the possibility of using this procedure in public agencies, in order to mitigate the negative impacts caused by mass movements, in the rural and urban environments. The bio-sludge carbonaceous matrix provides an expectation that adsorbents can be produced from the residue. The objective of this study was to analyze the organic matter influence on the porosity of activated carbons produced from textile (LT) and recycled paper (LP) industries bio-sludge and evaluate its applicability through methylene blue (MB) adsorption. The activated carbons were denominated LTA and LPA. The bio-sludge organic matter was analyzed by determining the total organic carbon (TOC), fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA). LP presented TOC 9.77%, FA 4.12% and HA 2.07%. LT presented higher levels of the parameters: TOC 31.25%, FA 12.64% and HA 3.21%. As obtained by the infrared spectroscopy analysis, LT and LP presented oxygenated surface groups, however, LT presented a greater amount of the groups. Thus, the higher amount of oxygenated groups on the surface of LT is related to the material's higher FA content. The LTA presented higher iodine number (959 mgI2/g) than LPA (234 mgI 2 /g). The results indicate that the organic matter content relates to the porosity development, being that higher levels of TOC and FA resulted in a better-developed pores. From the adsorption experimental equilibrium data, it was observed that LTA was more effective in removing MB than LPA. The chemical properties of the materials influenced the adsorptive behavior, however, the surface area contributed more decisively to the adsorption capacity.
Desenvolvimento rural. Bacia hidrográfica. Decentralized technologies appropriate for treating domestic sewage in rural areas: case study for a rural community in Simonesia - Minas Gerais Abstract The absence of domestic sewage treatment systems is one of the main causes of unhealthy and environmental degradation, in addition to being a strong threat to the food security of Brazilian rural families. The study aimed to provide subsidies for the elaboration of a program for the implementation of domestic sewage treatment in the area of the watershed of the Córrego do Mato, located in the rural community of São Braz, Simonésia, Minas Gerais. The situation of water supply and sanitation for 67 households was investigated. A worrying scenario was found in relation to the final disposal of domestic sewage, with 96 % of households being in an inadequate situation - in natura disposal in water courses or rudimentary cesspits. Appropriate alternatives have been proposed for the treatment of domestic sewage according to the needs and local conditions of the study area. The alternatives chosen are social and ecological technologies with replication and already implemented in other rural locations. Keywords: Wastewater. Rural development. Hydrographic basin.
Abstract This study presents an analysis of the temporal and spatial trend of surface water quality in the Piranga River watershed, a sub-basin of the Doce River, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Statistical, multivariate and non-parametric tests were applied to assess 19 quality parameters of 7 stations in the IGAM/ANA monitoring network, obtained from 2008 to 2018. The results of Spearman correlation and Mann-Kendall trend analyzis suggested that 73.68% of the parameters show values with varying trends, with greater changes associated with total chloride, in loco electrical conductivity, iron, nitrate and pH. The analyzis of hierarchical clusters defined three large groups of monitoring stations, grouped according to the region within the hydrographic basin, corresponding to the upper, middle and lower parts. However, throughout the entire hydrographic basin, degradation of water quality was observed during the evaluated period, mainly related to the release of domestic sewage and surface runoff from agricultural areas. Thefact that the WQI –Water quality Index –of 4 of the 7 stations present a temporal trend of stabilization, in values considered as regular, deserves attention from the social actors of the hydrographic basin for actions to recover the quality of surface water in the watercourses of the region, especially in the region from the source and mouth of the Piranga river.
