This article brings the results of an investigation into the role of WhatsApp audio messages in the 2018 Brazilian presidential elections, proposing that instant voice messaging borrows elements from radio language. We started from a broader research, conducted by the Brazilian National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD, in its Portuguese acronym), which identified a network composed of 220 WhatsApp groups – all of them with open-entry links – supporting six different candidates. Those groups put together thousands of anonymized profiles linked through connections to similar groups, configuring an extensive network. More than 1 million messages, including 98,000 audios, were gathered and downloaded during 2018 Brazilian electoral period (from June to October). We focused on eighteen audios with major circulation (totalling 3622 appearances) among the ones shared at least 100 times, which were extracted and analysed. The use of radio content analysis techniques pointed out strong evidence that audio messaging remediate radiophonic elements such as intimacy and colloquial language to accelerate disinformation campaigns.

This report proposes an initial analysis of data collected for the Permanent Directory of Theses and Dissertations from Compolítica, the Brazilian Association of Political Communication Scholars. The Directory is a digital repository of research content related to the topic, with institutional and comprehensive scope, that is, open to new submissions. From an initial corpus of over 600 titles already registered in the database, this article aims to provide a preliminary examination of postgraduate research produced in the country in the disciplinary interface of Communication and Politics, focusing on the period 1992-2012, in which the data is concentrated and when there is higher output available. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to discuss the themes, institutions and researchers and map, through them, the conformation of the field of Communication and Politics in Brazil, comprising the networks of researchers, their ties and influences, as well as their historical and institutional trends.

The onset and popularization of internet throughout the past decades have been followed by positive expectations as regards its effects on democratic citizenship. This research proposes to explore qualitatively the views of internet users themselves on internet and on the role played by online political information in the routine of a presidential campaign, from the point of view of a common citizen as a voter. We have opted to investigate the non-expert but steady internet user, to whom internet has become a key tool for the circulation of political opinions. This is a preliminary approach making use of the 2010 presidential election in Brazil as a case study, but focusing on the more general habits and practices of internet users as regards information, and mainly political information.
