The aim of this study was to find out whether Masters class swimming affects strength disproportion and if there is a correlation between the length of sport swimming training in Masters swimmer's past (SST) and strength parameter's deficits? Eighteen Masters category swimmers affiliated in Szczecin Masters Team (178.3 ±2.28 m; 77.9 ±2.86 kg) participated in the study. Isokinetic strength measurement was made on Biodex S4 dynamometer. Subjects performed shoulder flexion/extension moves: 3 repetitions -60 deg/sec and 20 repetitions -180 deg/sec. Following values were used: peak torque (PT), maximal repetition work (MRW), coefficient of variation (COV), total work (TW), average power (AP), agonist to antagonist ratio (AG:AN). None of the investigated variables were statistically significant in side to side comparison. All of the parameters were higher in extension. Also, no statistically significant difference between sides in AG:AN. Moderate positive correlation was found between SST and PT deficit in extension movement (0.420). Also low positive correlation between SST and PT deficit in flexion (0.396), and MRW deficit in extension (0.352). Masters class swimming did not affect side strength disproportion or agonist to antagonist differences. However, it is possible that swimming training in other categories does.
Strength training is an important part of the preparation of competitive athletes. The subject of interest of the scientists connected of sports swimming was the level of strength ability of the competitors practising this sport and the influence of this ability on the final sports result. The purpose of this review is to describe and consider the impact of strength training of the shoulder muscles in sports swimming. A literature review was conducted in Embase, Medline PubMed, DOAJ, EBSCO and Google databases. Basic search terms are: training in sports swimming, strength tests, evaluation of muscle properties, rotation of the arm, strength measurement methods. Results: 235 results were found and 148 professional publications were selected and analysed. A thorough review of scientific publications indicates that strength parameters of the shoulder girdle muscles played a very important role on the sports performance of swimmers. The programmes combining swim training with 'on land' strength improvement or electrical stimulation are more effective than swim training alone. Significant fatigue of the rotator muscles can impair shoulder stability and result in injury. Increased strength in the internal rotation movement may result pathological conditions of the shoulder.
The available literature analysed the recommendations and optimal conditions for conducting aqua fitness classes. It was decided to check whether these guidelines are related to the practical use of facilities for conducting this type of recreational activities. The research problem was undertaken to assess the use of local swimming pools for recreational aqua fitness classes and changes in their use in 2012 and 2019. Methods. The study covered all functioning swimming pools within the city of Szczecin, in 2012 (n = 17) and 2019 (n = 16). In order to collect the necessary data, the document analysis technique (load lists of individual facilities and lists of places where aqua fitness classes were conducted by individual entities) and the interview technique (with persons working in the aforementioned facilities, possessing the necessary information, and with the managers of individual businesses that offered aqua fitness classes in Szczecin's swimming pools) were used. Results. Both in 2012 and 2019, the use of Szczecin's swimming pools for recreational aqua fitness was considered satisfactory. Changes in the use of Szczecin's swimming pools for the purposes of recreational aqua fitness took place over the course of several years with two swimming pools being discontinued (due to facility characteristics and conditions -temperature and water depth) and one new, private facility being opened. The number of businesses offering recreational aqua fitness services has not changed. Recreational aqua fitness classes were conducted both at typically recreational, intimate facilities located at hotels, as well as at medium and large facilities, typically sports ones. Conclusions. The conditions, modernity of the facility and location were conducive to increased participation and utilisation of the Szczecin swimming pool base for the purposes of aqua fitness classes.
