Durante 2008 y 2009 se evaluaron seis cultivares de maíz bajo tres densidades de población en Toluca, México, con el objetivo de conocer su índice de área foliar, coeficiente de atenuacióndeluz,radiacióninterceptada,eficienciaeneluso de la radiación y rendimiento de grano. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques al azar con arreglo en parcelas divididas, las parcelas grandes correspondieron a las densidades de población (6.9, 7.8 y 8.9 plantas m-2) y las subparcelas a los cultivares (‘Amarillo’, ‘Cacahuacintle’, ‘Jiquipilco’, ‘Z-60’, ‘Cóndor’y ‘H-50’). El análisis de varianza combinado detectó diferencias signif icativas entre años, densidades y cultivares para todas las variables,conexcepcióndelcoeficientedeatenuacióndeluzy radiación interceptada entre años. Las interacciones no fueron signif icativas, excepto en años × densidades en el índice de área foliar y en años × cultivares para rendimiento de grano. Entre años, el rendimiento promedio de los cultivares fue superior en 2008 (1 133 g m-2), 16.9% a 2009, debido al mayor número de granos m-2 (2 826) y a la eficiencia en el uso de la radiación (0.79 g MJ-1). Las mejores densidades de población fueron 7.8 y 8.9 plantas m-2 (rendimiento promedio de 1 081 y 1 096 g m-2, respectivamente) equivalente a 13.9% y 15.1% más que con 6.9 plantas m-2. Lo anterior fue consecuencia de los mejores promedios presentados por estas densidades de población en todas las variables bajo estudio. Entre cultivares, ‘Jiquipilco’, ‘Amarillo’ y ‘Cóndor’ presentaron el rendimiento promedio másaltocon1156,1076y1047gm-2.
Los factores ambientales y su variación influyen en el crecimiento, desarrollo y rendimiento del maíz (Zea mays L.) en valles altos como el de Toluca, México. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la temperatura, precipitación y radiación en los ciclos de cultivo 2008, 2009 y 2010 en el rendimiento de seis cultivares de maíz. La hipótesis fue que temperatura, precipitación y radiación solar en el valle de Toluca afectarán positiva y significativamente el rendimiento de maíz. El estudio se desarrolló en la Facultad de Ciencias Agrícolas de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, Campus El Cerrillo, Piedras Blancas (UAEMex). Los datos de las normales climatológicas estudiadas se obtuvieron de la estación meteorológica de la Facultad de Ciencias Agrícolas, Comisión Nacional del Agua, estación Calixtlahuaca y del Centro de Investigación de Ciencias Agrícolas de la UAEMex. Estos datos se analizaron con ANDEVA (p<0.05), y el diseño experimental fue completamente al azar. Los tratamientos fueron los años y tres datos de cada variable fueron las repeticiones. Los resultados indicaron que existieron diferencias significativas en precipitación, pero las diferencias en temperatura y radiación no fueron significativas. La precipitación mayor (941.3 mm) ocurrió en 2008 y superó estadísticamente a 2009, (750 mm) y 2010 (579.3). La disminución de la lluvia en 2009 y 2010, respecto a 2008, fue 20.3 y 38.4%. El rendimiento de maíz mayor (1132.6 g m-2) se obtuvo en 2008 porque la disponibilidad mayor de lluvia durante el ciclo del cultivo coincidió con el llenado de grano, en un efecto de sincronización con las etapas fenológicas R3 y R6. La conclusión es que la heterogeneidad en la precipitación limitó el rendimiento del cultivo, así como la duración del ciclo.
