Abstract. Irrigation infrastructures as canals and reservoirs shape a complex water supply system in semiarid agrarian ecosystems. Thus, Carrizales is a paradigmatic example. It is a rural environment placed between two Natural Parks, El Hondo de Elche-Crevillente and Las Salinas de Santa Pola, criss-crossed with an extensive network of canals and ponds, which finally have organised and connected the territory based on the presence of water. The influence of canals on wildlife and the environment has not been studied despite their importance and similarity to other fluvial habitats. In order to assess its influence on bird communities in breeding season, we carried out bird counts, whereas we selected different sections in canals, representing all different possible habitats, while we studied physical characteristics, associated vegetation -mainly reed (Phragmites australis)-, and the land uses in the neighboring areas. We detected 37 bird species, most of which were also breeding in the wetlands nearby. Data analysis let us know that associated vegetation to the canals and reed development were the ma...
