Artículo recibido el 19-09-06Aceptación definitiva: 09-10-06 La indeterminación de la traducción archivísticaPor Alejandro Delgado Gómez IntroducciónDe unos años a esta parte, la disciplina y la prácti-ca archivísticas han venido experimentando un vuelco radical que se ha escrito, hasta donde sabemos, en gran medida, pero no exclusivamente, en lengua inglesa, tanto porque las comunidades originales son angloparlantes como, en menor grado, porque los colectivos en otras lenguas han venido a considerarla como lingua franca. Esto no significa, por otra parte, que todos los grupos archivísticos anglo-parlantes hayan adoptado el mismo cambio de modelo ni en el mismo grado. En dicho conjunto de comunidades existe en la actualidad un amplio abanico conceptual y práctico que abarca desde un modelo estrictamente tradicional del ciclo de vida de los documentos hasta las aproximaciones más evolucionadas al modelo del continuo de los documentos.En un marco social y profesional crecientemente globalizado, se puede concebir de manera argumentable la necesidad de transmitir este vuelco radical a otras comunidades que se desenvuelven en otras lenguas. En lo que nos concierne, es posible pensar en la necesidad de transmitirlo a la comunidad archivística que trabaja en lengua castellana. De hecho, distintos grupos e individuos están haciendo en la actualidad el esfuerzo de traducir al castellano normas y textos relevantes a partir de los originales en lengua inglesa.
Desde un punto de vista tradicional, un documento de archivo es conservable porque tiene un contenido estable y una forma fija. Esta perspectiva ha sido modificada dramáticamente por un entorno digital caracterizado por la inestabilidad y la dinamicidad. Uno de los principales problemas de la archivística actual es definir los requisitos de conservación de este tipo de documentos. De igual modo, deberíamos abordar el hecho de que no todos los documentos digitales son conservables, sino que, más bien, meramente podemos proporcionarles continuidad. Con el objetivo de explorar los conceptos de conservación digital y de continuidad digital, el presente texto esboza en primer lugar una visión general de las técnicas de conservación en uso o en progreso, agrupadas en tres categorías: normas y buenas prácticas; tecnologías; soportes y formatos. En segundo lugar, selecciona una muestra de objetos procedentes del arte digital, carente de procesos reglados y de métodos rigurosos de conservación. Esta selección asume la siguiente aseveración: las tecnologías utilizadas para generar objetos de arte digital son muy similares a las empleadas para generar documentos de administración y gobierno electrónicos, de tal manera que las soluciones aplicadas a un entorno también pueden aplicarse al otro. Para llevar a cabo la selección se utiliza el criterio de incorporar objetos progresivamente dinámicos, multimediales y propietarios. Se analizan las propiedades técnicas de estos objetos desde el punto de vista de su conservación auténtica. A la luz de las técnicas esbozadas, se decide acerca de la posibilidad de conservación de los mismos. En aquellos casos en los que la conservación no es posible, se utiliza el concepto de continuidad; es decir, si un objeto no es conservable en su forma actual, ¿se puede garantizar al menos que seguirá siendo utilizable de algún modo? Los resultados que se espera obtener del presente ejercicio son los siguientes: ciertos objetos, presumiblemente los más estáticos y menos propietarios, serán conservables con las técnicas actuales; a algunos otros, dotados de mayor dinamicidad, se les podrá proporcionar continuidad, incluso en una forma distinta a la que tienen en la actualidad. Por último, ciertos objetos, probablemente los más propietarios, no serán conservables ni tendrán continuidad. Se pretende llegar a una doble conclusión: por una parte, la archivística ha de asumir que no todos los objetos digitales son conservables, aunque a muchos de ellos se les podrá dotar de continuidad para que sigan siendo utilizables; por otra, en un entorno tecnológico difícil, esta continuidad debe venir dada por la aplicación de determinadas normas, buenas prácticas, soportes, formatos y tecnologías, de los que, a modo de recomendación, se espera poder definir un listado relevante.
Primero, se establece el contexto en el que nace la necesidad de elaborar una ontología. Después, se discuten los conceptos de modelo y de ontología, y se justifica la selección de un concepto intensional. Se discute de igual modo la diferencia entre el diseño de ontologías y la reingeniería de procesos. Finalmentelican con más detalle el método y los lenguajes IDEF5 para la creación de ontologías. Se refieren algunos ejemplos de software relevante. (a)
Se analizan los metadatos archivísticos de conservación, a los que se ha dedicado menos atención que a los metadatos descriptivos y que, sin embargo, son también necesarios para gestionar datos en un entorno digital. En primer lugar, el presente texto proporciona defi niciones bien aceptadas de metadatos de conservación. En segundo lugar, revisa algunos proyectos existentes y, a partir de ellos, sugiere una propuesta de implantación en el entorno archivístico. Para ello, se examinan un modelo de referencia ampliamente aceptado —OAIS (Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System)— y cinco experiencias: el proyecto Preservation Metadata for Digital Collections de la National Library of Australia (NLA), la red Networked European Deposit Library (NEDLIB), el proyecto CURL Exemplars in Digital Archives (CEDARS), el proyecto conjunto del Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) y el Research Libraries Group (RLG) PREMIS (PREservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies), y el proyecto de la New Zealand National Library Metadata Standards Framework-Preservation Metadata. En el trabajo inicial, estos proyectos se describieron y se evaluaron cualitativamente, tomando como criterios los de modularidad, extensibilidad, refi namiento, multilingüismo, interoperabilidad y reusabilidad, así como el de existencia de una gramática formal y de una gramática formalizada. Se tabularon los elementos de estos proyectos para facilitar una comparación entre ellos. El resultado fue una serie de elementos de metadatos ya existentes, así como ejemplos y una discusión acerca de su viabilidad en dos entornos: el de las bases de datos relacionales y el de los lenguajes de marcado. En el primer entorno, se sugería una definición de campos y sus posibilidades de utilización. En el segundo, se propuso una instancia de documento XML (Extensible Markup Language), susceptible de ser utilizada como base para la generación de metadatos de conservación en archivos digitales. Esta instancia sirvió para generar automáticamente varias gramáticas (schemas y DTD). Se tomaron en consideración las posibilidades de combinación de las mejores características de ambos entornos. Por último, se propusieron, a partir de ejemplos de software disponibles, opciones para que la utilización de metadatos de conservación en archivos digitales resultara viable
