Se ha presumido recientemente que ciertos productos químicos en el ambiente tienen la capacidad de interrumpir los sistemas endocrinos de los seres humanos y de la fauna, que causan efectos adversos para la salud. Los estudios de los seres humanos y de la fauna sugieren que la exposición a estos productos tienen el potencial de afectar al sistema reproductivo, así como otros sistemas biológicos vitales para la salud.
Introducción. Motivado por los casos innumerables de infecciones de diarrea que frecuentemente ocurren, en los países en vías de desarrollo, se calibró un biosensor a fibra optica con intensidad modulada usando como ejemplar Escherichia coli O157: H7.
Material y métodos. La sensibilidad del dispositivo se ha calibrado para las unidades formadoras de colonia (CFU) de 10 a 800 rindiendo un error más pequeño que 11%.
Resultados. Se obtuvo una correlación entre la respuesta óptica y el número instantáneo de bacterias. El signo del rendimiento óptico fue 0.016 (± 0.001) dB por hora por bacteria. En todo los casos la detección empezó después de 270 ± 4 minutos, 5-10 veces más rápido que las técnicas bacteriológicas convencionales.
Discusión. Los resultados obtenidos pueden contribuir al problema de monitoreo de patógenos que representen problemas en el campo de la salud pública.
El patógeno emergente enterohemorrágico Escherichia coli 0157:H7 es actualmente una importante causa de enfermedad por la vía alimentaria, siendo responsable de varios brotes de diarreas y con la capacidad de producir brotes epidémicos. Algunos serotipos son capaces de producir enteritis hemorrágica, que puede complicarse con el síndrome hemolítico urémico.
La mayor incidencia de enfermedad diarreica inducida por este patógeno está en niños menores de 10 años y en adultos mayores y ancianos que viven en los países subdesarrollados del mundo, en donde las enfermedades diarreicas bacterianas siguen siendo un problema significativo de salud pública. En los datos de incidencia, las proporciones informadas en los países desarrollados son 5-8 casos/100,000 habitantes por año, con variaciones regionales. En los pacientes de países subdesarrollados estos reportes son escasos y no refleja la información real.
Se revisa la epidemiologia del microorganismo en varios países correlacionandose serotipos de E. coli O157:H7 a los índices letales.
