El rendimiento promedio de los cultivos comerciales de frutilla en el sur del Uruguay es inferior al rendimiento alcanzable para las condiciones de producción, de acuerdo a los rendimientos experimentales y los mejores resultados en cultivos comerciales, lo cual determina la existencia de una brecha de rendimiento (BR). Por otro lado, existe una gran variabilidad entre productores. El objetivo del trabajo fue identificar, jerarquizar y analizar los factores ambientales y de manejo que explican las brechas de rendimiento en el cultivo de frutilla en el sur del Uruguay. Se evaluaron 76 cultivos en dos zafras de producción en una muestra de 13 predios representativos de la zona. Desarrollamos una metodología combinando los principios del Diagnóstico Agronómico Regional y en el Análisis de BR. Se evaluaron variables de crecimiento, desarrollo, manejo, rendimiento y ambiente. El análisis estadístico combinó análisis de senderos, boundary lines, clusters y árboles de regresión. El rendimiento comercial promedio fue 16,9 ± 12,1 y 24,9 ± 8,1 Mg.ha-1 y la BR promedio fue 65 y 46 % para las zafras 2012 y 2013, respectivamente. El crecimiento y desarrollo vegetativo del cultivo a inicio de la primavera, evaluado a través de la cobertura del suelo (CS), fue el determinante principal del rendimiento, afectado por la fecha de plantación, la fecha en que se alcanzó la densidad definitiva de plantas y la densidad del cultivo. Los rendimientos comerciales de los grupos de baja, media y alta CS a inicio de la primavera fueron 8,7 ± 6,1, 20,0 ± 8,1 y 28,9 ± 8,5 Mg.ha-1 , respectivamente. La brecha de rendimiento relativo en los grupos de media y alta CS fue explicada principalmente por el pH del suelo, el balance de agua en el cultivo y la fertilización durante el cultivo. La BR fue explicada por variables de manejo que podrían mejorarse sin incrementar los costos de producción.
