AbstractThe pragmatic theories that firstly tried to define irony hardly reached further than the rhetorical conception, according to which irony is just a trope. This continuity is seldom assumed by modern authors. Actually, KerbratOrecchioni seems to be the only one that considers her work in this way, while other theories present the same tropological pattern but covered under a new terminology. Quite the opposite, the polyphonic perspective by Ducrot is an original, purely pragmatical and really alternative account of irony.Key words: Irony, Rhetoric, Speech acts, Implicature, Polyphony.
AbstractThe mention theory of irony, which argües that the ironist uses his utterance to mention its literal meaning expressing a derogative attitude toward it, is excelled and comprehended by Ducrot's perspective based in his notion of polyphony. The polyphonic account of irony trascends also the pretense theory, according to which the ironist pretends to be an injudicious person, but is actually intending the persons to whom the irony is addressed to discover the pretense and thereby his negative attitude toward the speaker and the utterance. 33-55
