A large-scale random sample is used to empirically examine the relationships between implementation of Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and three organizationlevel measures that have historically been attributed to AMT, but not fully tested along the AMT spectrum: market-oriented flexibility of the production process, organizational integration of production processes, and administrative intensity of the organization. Results indicate that as an organization moves along the technology scale from stand-alone AMT (e.g., CNC machines) through functionally oriented AMT (FMS and CAM) toward CIM, not only do its production processes become more integrated with each other, but those processes become more integrated with other functional systems of the organization, and the quality and timeliness of production information increase. Furthermore, this relationship becomes stronger as companies increase their level of implementation for the latter two technologies. Conversely, market-oriented flexibility decreases and administrative intensity is not observed to change as companies move along the technology spectrum. Future research should examine how organizational redesign and implementation strategies that accompany AMT implementation can concomitantly enhance organizational integration of the production process and market-oriented flexibility.Ma ti age tn r n t . an d I n re rn a t i o n a I Jo 11 rn a I of Ope rations and Production Munagetnent. ERP systems have been identified as platform technologies that permit the adoption of subsequent technologies that leverage the information integration created by an ERP system. Although significant research attention has been directed at ERP system adoption, very little attention has been paid to understanding ERP-enabled adoption, that is, adoptions that occur and are facilitated after the initial ERP system. This paper seeks to fill this void. Synthesizing existing works, the authors construct a model that examines the link between initial ERP system and ERP-enabled adoption. The results indicate that initial ERP system factors (Extent of ERP Implementation and Current System Performance) act as antecedences to organizational ease of use and relative advantage of subsequent technologies. Moreover, the authors' findings implicate that organizational ease of use and relative advantage of subsequent technologies have a positive impact on ERP-enabled adoption. These results have important implications for ERP system evaluation and justification. First, the findings highlight the importance of recognizing the potential additions and inherent benefits created by an initial ERP system. Second, the findings also underscore the importance of considering ERP-enabled adoption of subsequent technologies.
A large-scale random sample is used to empirically examine the relationships between adoption of computeraided design (CAD) and five organisational characteristics that are likely to affect the probability of a firm adopting an information technology. The organisational characteristics tested are bureaucratic control, internal communication, external communication, organisational innovation, and the firm's size. Results indicate that bureaucratic control, internal communication, and external communication do affect the likelihood of a firm adopting CAD but organisational innovation and organisational size do not. These results suggest there are differences and similarities between the organisational influences associated with classic adoption models developed with emerging technologies and the organisational influences associated with CAD adoption and possibly other mature information technologies.
